Not for small business

I do all the web design for my company myself, so I often second guess if the site is laid out well. Just because I think that it is clear doesn't always mean that it is, so user testing is important for me to get feedback.

Here is my big problem with the software - it is prohibitively expensive for small businesses. They used to offer a one-off free test that would give me a rough idea of where to start, and then it was a more affordable pricing structure if you only wanted one or two tests. Now the only option is an expensive monthly payment, in the hundreds of dollars. To be fair, virtually all other companies are the same - but it is not affordable at all for smaller businesses.
  • Great ability to target audience.
  • Great flexibility of questions to ask.
Cons
  • PRICE!
  • Options for smaller business.
Honestly, the functionality of this software is one of the best on the market. It does an incredible job of really dialing in on what you want to know and getting access to testers.

I used UserZoom primarily to conduct quantitative usability tests. I was the first to use it on our team of user experience researchers, and helped assess it for purchase for our team. We used UserZoom to assess online and mobile experiences, when we needed the quantitative sample to assess the overall performance etc.... which is hard to do in a lab or other means. Later on we also used it to conduct simple surveys as well as tree testing, card sorting, and even used it to track performance when conducting qualitative usability tests in the lab. I also conducted an intercept survey using UserZoom when the company launched a new mobile design, so that we could capture the feedback of our pilot participants.
  • Quantitative testing can be done on the cheap compared to other quant tools or vendors... once you buy the license, you only pay for additional recruiting and you are managing the project, so there isn't the high cost of having other vendors doing the project management or running a survey etc.
  • Farily robust means of tracking and recording data. I also relied heavily on the excel spreadsheet of all the raw data, which you can have UZ customize for you to get what you need.
  • Great support system from the UserZoom team - they have researchers who can help with coding and also provide research support for a very good price.
  • Also they have tree testing, card sorting, survey capabilities (in addition to usability testing)... and mobile testing. and they seem to be continously be developing the tool to support additional methods.
Cons
  • There is some learning curve with the study programming aspect.... however, once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy.
  • There is some limitations with what you can do... mainly because the study programming follows a linear model, and although there's logic that you can manipulate, I found some limitations (but never enough to cancel my study or look for an alternate due to methodology issues). The good news is that UZ also makes continued improvements in these areas as well... so I am expecting them to continue to look at this as well.
It is expensive. It is warrented if your organization has a high volume of studies and is mature enough to do more than qualitative usability testing. On the other hand, if you find yourself doing many surveys (large or small), usability tests, etc. there is cost savings due to the recruiting cost being the only thing you pay for... by the way, you will have to figure out how the coordinate the recruiting, but UserZoom is so helpful with this process and I think recently they have made efforts to bring those solutions in house.

UserTesting is used across the user experience team at my company to answer the research questions that we have across our product teams that we support. We use it for a variety of research methods from unmoderated to moderated, generative to evaluative, and more. The problems that the platform helps us solve are the ability to test our assumptions and quickly gain feedback on design concepts that influences the product decisions that our teams makes.
  • Finding niche audiences
  • Ability to collaborate with other UX teammates or product partners
  • Quickly getting insights
Cons
  • Expanding their panel of healthcare users and customers
  • Better validation that users are who they say they are
  • More accurate and helpful sentiment analysis on sessions
UserTesting is a great way to quickly gain user or customer feedback in both generative and evaluative research studies. Want to better understand who your users are but don't have time to be on moderated interviews, UserTesting can help. Want to gain early feedback on design concepts, they can help you there too.

Recommending this tool for any UX team!

Our UX/UI team uses UserTesting regularly to conduct research studies. We have used different features, from unmoderated tests like A/B testing or prototype tests to live User Interviews. We enjoy the pool of candidates that are found within a few minutes of the test launch. Why do we use it? To talk to users within our industry to understand their needs, motivations, and expectations when using products like ours. We believe this tool is currently the best option on the market to combine all of our research efforts. The only struggle is the limited amount of pre-screener questions and the limitations within Canada (provinces/terretories).
  • Intuitive software
  • Easy onboarding
  • Fast participant recruitment
  • Easy scheduling
Cons
  • Confidentiality agreement toggle - Name might be confusing when used for other documents like NDAs or Privacy Policies
  • Recruitment in Canada - balanced demographic within provinces/ territories
Any research efforts are met perfectly with this tool. We can do moderated or unmoderated sessions and utilize the transcript for quotes. For live sessions like User Interviews, we also like the option to have a note taker in the call that the participant is unaware off. We believe this created less stress on the participant. As mentioned before, the only problem we are facing as a Canadian company is the pre screening process. We would like to have participants represented from within all our provinces and territories. This causes us to launch multiple tests and then reject/accept a certain province for each one.

UserTesting is used by the UX Design team to primarily conduct unmoderated user testing for a variety of new product features.
  • Super quick - Can usually have results in an hour or two
  • Excellent chat support
  • Premier Support can help you set up a test or provide feedback tailored to your testing goals.
Cons
  • Organizing tests takes a bit more effort than I would like to
  • Wish folder structure had a variety of views
  • Add in an option to include a SUS survey in an unmoderated test
Great to quickly validate new patterns and to run general usability testing for new product features. It can quickly put together a test, launch it, and have results in a few hours. It has been a vital tool in providing research readouts to product leadership.
