We are using Varonis to audit our Isilon file servers. We have used this software to identify sensitive data locations and locations that need to be more secure. This software has helped us automate a lot of the processes to secure these data locations. It took us a few months to fix these issues; whereas, it would have taken maybe years to repair manually. We are also using this to help us identify the presence of malware and alert us if any is detected and logoff any offending user.
- Varonis logging is very robust and captures all audit events being sent from the file servers.
- The ability to report and alert on Active Directory account events works very well with file activity monitoring. It can show the complete picture of what an account did while being used.
- Have a customizable dashboard is great for being able to show upper management information that only pertains to them.
- Some of the reporting interfaces are difficult to navigate and appear somewhat dated.
- This software does require a lot of servers to be built for various purposes.
- Varonis is on the pricey side and now requires subscription based licensing. This can present problems is your company tries to use very little OpX spending vs CapX.

- Varonis has only been a positive impact on our environment, but helping us close security holes that we didn't know existed.
- This product has also provided piece of mind by watching our environment for Malware attacks and taking automatic actions if necessary.
- This software does require a fair amount of server resources, but fortunately can be hosted in a virtual environment and has made this need easier to handle.
Varonis does a much better job presenting the entire picture. It can show an account being used, then elevated and then what actions were done with that account on a file system. ADaudit didn't have all of this information available with the modules we tested.

you’ll be able to protect all your sensitive documents, emails, confidential business information, your employee personal records, and even your financial records as well. Varonis analyses your data time to time and makes sure there are no other suspicious activities.
- Regular confidential data analysis to detect any anomalies.
- Ability to detect such anomalies and take necessary action without any human involvement.
- Keeping separate event logs for each file to keep track of its changes.
- The Initial setting up process could be more simplified.
- It requires a noticeable amount of processing power to run the system smoothly.
- You're gonna need full-time staff members just for the maintenance.
- Automated risk assessment
- Less staff involvement for security concerns
- More control over sensitive data and will be able to analyze employee behaviors as well.
- One positive impact is the improved data security.
- Price of the product is not much affordable for medium to large companies.
- Sometimes it's hard to deal with such a strict security as employees are not so happy with going over barriers.
When it comes to data security we all want something stable with good protocol practices. Varonis is good at data analyzing, detecting threats, taking actions and compliance. Varonis needs lots of resources to run and it is somewhat expensive. But still I believe that Varonis does a good job among the other competitors.

Data Classification is important, so select the best tool.
The application is used by the IT Department and is implemented enterprise wide. We use the product as a part of our defense in depth approach to cyber-security. The tool enable our enterprise to monitor PII in a way we were not able to monitor it prior. The tool also provides significant reporting tools that we use to augment our monthly security meetings.
- This tool allows us to protect sensitive data.
- It also improves our ability to maintain compliance with many different requirements.
- The tool also permits auditing capabilities that we did not have prior to its implementation.
- The tools also proactively alerts us to potential ransomware related events.
- The tool is vast and it takes a significant amount of time to tune it for your evironment.
- The report formatting is rudimentary and takes a while to get use to for staff.
- The integration to our SIEM could be better.
- The ability to work through remediation through the Varonis interface is excellent.
- The reporting options are very helpful.
- The alerting works exactly as designed.
- The administrative interface works as expected and it is easy to set up rules within the tool.
- We have identified data classifications issues that our organization was not aware of prior to the implementation.
- The tool does take a dedicated resource for it to be effective.
- Varonis has improved the speed with which we can fulfill audit requests, leaving us more time for other tasks.
- SolarWinds Access Rights Manager (ARM)
The tools does not allow easy search capabilities and auditing is a little more difficult. The tool is less expensive, but the expertise surrounding the installation and management of the tool is lacking. The reporting feature is less robust and the ability to fully understand user permissions is less sophisticated.

A must-have file/folder auditing platform
We're started using Varonis more than 6 years ago, primarily its file server auditor features, to log file server actions such as file/folders read, write, moving, deletion, etc. It's surely an important tool to have when you have file server incidents. Like some department folders 'disappearing' and the manager or department's head demanding to know who was responsible. We had some incidents like that and Varonis really proved its value. It has native integration to a wide range of storage/NAS/fileservers. In our case, we use Netapp storage and it integrates to it through Netapp's native "policies." It works really well! Varonis can also be used to manage permissions and to find access "anomalies," for example, if a user starts to read/write a large amount of data at the same time (it could be an infected computer running a ransomware attack).
- Native integration to Netapp storage (and to others, but we use a Netapp).
- Files/folders access logs (read/write/move/modify, etc.).
- Due to the large amount of logs it keeps, it can be really slow to search.
- It's console could be more user-friendly and intuitive. Maybe web-based. Why not?
- File/folders auditing: This is why we bought it in the first place.
- It helped us during critical incidents where we were able to identify who was responsible for certain actions on the file server.
Actually, we didn't expend much time evaluating other file auditing platforms. We chose Varonis just after a serious incident and we had already heard about Varonis at a Netapp event. So it was an easy choice. We called Varonis and asked them for a PoC, that's it. The PoC became a production and it is running until this day.
