We backup our whole Office 365 estate, which includes Exchange, Sharepoint/One Drive. It has allowed us to easily recover emails that have been lost by end-users. Our biggest concern before using Veeam for Office 365 was that we were not protected in the event of some data loss. With this solution, we have peace of mind that in case of a catastrophic event we would be able to recover everything.
  • Simple setup
  • Easy to restore files
  • Quick at backing up
  • Be able to exclude non licensed Office 365 accounts
Using Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365, we've had many occasions were someone has deleted emails or files on Sharepoint and we have been easily been able to recover the file before it was deleted or even changed within minutes not hours. This has allowed people to get back to work quicker.

We use Veeam for all our other backup needs and this product complements that offering very well and gives a simple feel with its ease of use.

  • Quick recovery
  • No data loss
  • Simple to setup
We were looking for a new backup solution for our business and wanted to be able to backup all our VMs as well as Office 365 so we could ensure we were always covered. Veeam Backup & Replication doesn’t have 365 backup within it so we looked to Veeam for 365 and it was a perfect project to go alongside.
Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 is super simple to use:
  1. Install
  2. Hook to 365
  3. Select what to backup
  4. Done
It couldn’t be any more simple to use but it can do lots more stuff as well. The API is very useful. We have a Grafana dashboard hooked up to the data pulled from the API as well to give us more visability.
This has happened many times where a user has deleted the wrong file or wrong email and it's always the most important file or email. With Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365, we've always been able to recover the item within minutes allowing the user to get back to their day and not costing the company money waiting for the work they need doing to be completed.
We tend to use restore to 365 or restore to zip. It depends on the situation at the time but all options work very well.
Backs up everything important in our 365 estate, and it is simple to use.
  • Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery
It's a much cheaper product and is a lot simpler to use. We chose Veeam because it does what we need and Veeam for 365 was needed as part of that purchase.
We've had to Veeam support a few times, and it's always been easy to get an answer to our question and have it resolved very quickly.

While Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 does have its retention policies and recycle bin to recover deleted items it wasn't sufficient for our needs. We use Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 to back up user mailboxes and Teams in Microsoft 365. Backups are stored for compliance and archive purposes should we need to go back to a point in time.
  • Easy to setup
  • Easy to maintain
  • Its reliable
  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 isn't 'multi geo' aware - this means we have to manually select resources to back up depending on their geo-location.
  • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 doesn't backup Private Channels users create in a Team - there are workarounds for this but it would be nice if this just worked.
I would recommend Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 where you need to protect against data corruption, ransomware, or where there is a requirement to maintain backups for compliance or archive purposes. Microsoft 365 does offer retention policies to recover deleted items out of the box, if this is all you need you probably don't need Veeam.

  • Simplification of our backup strategy
After reviewing the options for backup out of the box with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 it became clear we would need a third-party solution to backup our data in M365. As an existing Veeam customer for our on-premise backups we reviewed the Veeam backup for M365 along with some other vendors. We decided to go with Veaam because we trusted the product and have been very happy since.
It just works. We have been very happy since we started using Veeam backup for M365.
We haven't yet needed to recover from backups. However we have carried out a number of restore tests and have been surprised how easy it was.
We haven't yet used this feature.
Ability to set retention periods on the backups and also to back up to S3 compatible cloud storage
  • Veeam Backup & Replication
Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 compliments their backup solution for VMware and Physical servers 'Veeam Backup and Replication' If you are already using Veeam Backup and Replication and are thinking about backing up data in Microsoft 365 I would recommend Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.
We have contacted the support staff a number of times and found them to be very helpful.

Network / IT Support Technicians of varying levels. Veeam seems to require little training to use so even junior technicians seem to feel comfortable using it and management have confidence in the product.
  • A trusted product that will ensure data availability and integrity is prioritized
  • An easy to use product that requires minimal training
  • A product with good support we can rely on
  • None that we found
  • Our M365 tenant has multi Geo - unfortunately Veeam isnt aware of this so we have to be careful how to backup data regionally. This can be a challenge sometimes ensuring some Teams/Sites/Users dont get missed.
It works well for us, its a trusted product and the team love it.

We use Veeam Backup and Replication - so when it came to look for a product to backup M365 Veeam was the obvious choice.
We installed the trial and got it working right away - its been a dream to use.
We wouldn't change the way we selected this product. It was our first choice and it met our expectations, apart from the lack of Multi Geo support.
  • Implemented in-house

Change management was minimal
None really, this was a new product and the team implemented it as we adopted M365. No existing processes were changed, just new processes created.
  • Defining backup sets to be region aware - M365 MultiGeo
  • Ensuring immutability of the backup with our storage providers
None that I havent already mentioned
Yes, support was important to us. Fortunately we've not had to rely on it but should the worst happen its a good safety net to rely on.
No
When we were getting our environment setup and was looking to integrate the backups with our OnPrem and Cloud storage the support technician really took his time and we felt like he cared about our data. He made some excellent recommendations around immutability of backups too.
  • Initial Setup is very easy
  • Day to day monitoring
  • Restoring a file to original location
  • There is no multi-geo awareness in the product - we've had to great our own region collection groups and backup them to ensure we don't backup European data in the US and vice-versa
  • Defining backup sets - Teams and Groups overlap you could end up backing up same information twice

I purchased it to simply backup my important users' emails. I use Veeam Backup and Replication and find the products do a great job; I really didn't look at other products when I purchased this one.
  • My CFO seemed to have lost a whole year of important emails. I simply restored them to his mailbox in a matter of minutes.
  • An employee left the company but an issue came up with a quote this person sent out. I could search his mailbox and got the quote as well as all communications from that customer.
  • It is nice to be able to search emails in various mailboxes without disturbing the user.
  • It is also nice to go back in time. Say they deleted those emails last month I can go back years if needed.
  • I found the interface a little sloppy; it could use some cleaning up.
  • I would love to see a search option to search through all backup mailboxes instead of selecting the date of the mailbox and searching.
  • I don't see why I can't change the computer hostname without having issues. Veeam Backup seems to tie it to the license. This should be independent.
  • I would like to see a way to add licenses from the interface. Presently you have to go and buy from a provider, then download the license. I want to add five more licenses, and it would be great to select five more licenses and just bill be billed or have the bill be added to an account.
I only give it a 9 because I have not seen other solutions, but for me, this product works as expected.
  • This product saves me from being in a situation where I have to report to people who can fire me and say, "I am sorry you lost mail, but there is nothing I can do."
  • I remember the license was fairly inexpensive, and I used a used PC and bought a small Synology NAS, and it was up and running in a day.
  • I have not done an ROI because of too many variables, but in my would, this is low-hanging fruit and has saved me a few times from saying, "Nothing I can do."
The fact that previously our machines didn't keep more than 30 days of backup on them. Availability is excellent in Office 365. Most users or companies do not understand the importance of email.

Years ago, as a consultant, I would ask the IT manager how important is email, and he would say sort of important. So I would unplug the ethernet from the server, and he would start to shake and say, "Plug it back in!" and I would repeat the question, and he would change his mind pretty quickly. People use email to "CYA" themselves all the time, so email is a critical function. I installed many email systems in the past; this is easy to install and simply works with little maintenance. I opened up the interface once in a while and upgraded it that way, but it didn't work. Now, I download the update from my Veeam account and install it.
It works what else can you ask for
Nothing on the attack side of things, but again, my CFO lost important mail about benefits from a few years ago. I asked him a time frame, and we have been using it before then. I simply went back and restored it to a new folder in his email so he could go over it and put the mail he wanted to keep back and delete the rest.
I had a litigation issue (sorry, I just remembered), and I had to go back into four different mailboxes and pull all communication with this particular company. Once I gathered all the communication, I saved it as a PST file and sent it to our lawyers for them to go through and send it along. I can't imagine having to do that without Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365. It really saved me on this.
Archive - To go back in time and get emails someone might have deleted a year ago and still be able to retrieve them. Adding the mailbox to the backup only takes a few minutes. It is easy, and I simply check my mail that the backup happened as a daily chore.
Good, but I have not had anything really to support. The only support case was because I changed the hostname on the PC.

I keep the management backed up most of my users are only part of the sales process.

I take care of Veeam
  • Restoring mail
  • Searching for litigation
  • Peace of mind
  • I just use the way it was intended
  • Litigation was the only surprise so I'm glad I had Veeam

At this stage, I have no plans to change

I was already familiar with Veeam with backup and replication so I was comfortable with it. The only product from Veeam I was disappointed with is backup for AIX.
No eval, I just bought it and felt confident it was going to work.
  • Implemented in-house
Yes
Install was fairly straight forward. The configuration was little more challenging.
Change management was minimal
I have a staff of 2 we don't mess with change manegement
  • Getting the location of where to write the backups, Network didn't work, so I used ISCSI to get it to backup to Synology.
  • PC name change - Veeam should fix that.
Really easy, but we are not a big company. I am not backing up all users, just those that could fire me.
I was not offered premium support if my memory serves me well. The only support I had was one call once. I changed the hostname, and the product would not start. I can hardly give an accurate review on that, but I think they solved it on the phone, and it took a day.
No
Having to make only one call to support. I would say that is exceptional, wouldn't you?

We currently use Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 for all of our staff and students, backing up to AWS cloud storage. The backup solution is essential considering there is no backup of individual files in O365 by default. Using Veeam allows us to restore item level files quickly.
  • Fire and forget - the backup operation runs autonomously.
  • Very fast restores.
  • Allows us to backup to various cloud solutions.
  • As cloud storage is not built in then it is complex to set up the cloud side of things.
  • Maxes out CPU and RAM so cannot run anything else on the same VM.
The solution is very suitable for our needs, we can backup as much or as little as we want and control retention at the cloud end.
The app gives us the flexibility needed to adjust our spending on backup storage.
  • The solution gives us peace of mind should anything happen to users' data in O365.
There is no out of the box backup for O365 data, should anything happen to users' data in O365 we would be unable to restore.
The app itself is very usable and relatively simple to setup and configure.
So far, after 12 months of use we have not needed to restore data other than a periodic test that it is possible.
We have restored to the same location and to another location and the process was very straighforward.
It does what it says on the tin! The product backs up fine, and we love that it can be left to run without interruption with the occasional review of log files.
Also love that it is simple to use.
Veeam is much more flexible than AvePoint's product, and also easier to use. Actually cheaper too.
Veeam's support team has been excellent.
