I have only used Vena so I cannot say how it compares to others. I have heard from colleagues that other programs like Vena do not have a task list and I cannot imagine not having a task list. I was not involved in the process of selecting Vena so I cannot say why it was selected.

We evaluated several products over a few years and were comparing everything to our existing Excel templates and manual processes. We didn't pull the trigger on any of the others because it didn't feel like it was worth the investment, both funding and organizational change, to adopt a platform that didn't provide us the flexibility and time saved, which we've found with Vena. Other systems were good, but not good enough to get us over the line to commit to purchasing and implementation. Vena demonstrated an ability to understand our needs, provide a flexible platform and partner with us rather than just sell us something.

When looking at other tools, we were concerned about end user adoption and Vena stood out because of the use of Excel. It is a familiar format and provides almost endless flexibility when considering business processes that can be added. At first, Adapative was a front runner based on name recognition but the rigid, less flexible data model made the decision much easier. In Prophix case, it was still primarily hosting data on-site and we wanted a cloud based solution.

Vena blew away Crystal because it was Excel based and had such a flatter learning curve. As a client who has used Vena for 6 years now, I can tell a prospective client that your adoption period should be half if not great than half of what Saint Mary's was, which was less than 6 mos. The ease of report building will ensure that you are able to get information faster.

Prophix is powerful, and structures data on the back-end in a very similar way with multiple data models, and I have used it before. But the learning curve is steep. Building complex rules, e.g. for a union personnel model, was much harder than designing the same logic in Excel. The learning curve was steep and put off end-users, and even other Finance professionals. By working within Excel, Vena starts you higher up the learning curve. Adaptive is very user friendly, but the solution is much less flexible. One of my models uses a custom daily time hierarchy with day of week comparability across multiple years. In Vena, you can make a hierarchy however you like. That's not true in Adaptive. And security can only be applied along one dimension. With Vena, you can use task-binding to control access differently from one process to another. Host Analytics (now called Planful) was similar to Prophix in terms of power and maturity. It was more user friendly, but still didn't offer the combination of flexibility and approachability that Vena offers, and it was much more expensive.

As our company grows we need more efficient ways to manage profits, employees, working in a pandemic/hybrid situation across multiple states and more. We have continued to experience rapid growth and found Vena and the Vena partners are the best at simplifying the information pulled from the multiple systems we use for the wide range of needs our company has.

I really like Vena for organizations with smaller finance teams. Excel is at the heart of Vena so there is a less new technology for them to learn. All three solutions have strengths that make them appropriate for specific organizations.

BlackLine and Vena are similar in ways that they can help analyze the GL for any variances or discrepancies. At face value, you might think they are separate flows and do not cross. But with the ability to do account recs within Vena, there is indeed overlap. We are in the process of getting account recs up and running in Vena, but it looks powerful so far.
