Veritas Backup Exec
Veritas Backup Exec is a backup and disaster recovery solution. It works in virtual, physical, and multi-cloud environments and integrates with several third-party software releases and applications.

Backup Exec is designed for small to medium-sized business, not enterprise, for streamlining data backup and recovery into one product and interface. Key Features

  • Virtual, physical and multi-cloud environment support
  • Full integration with Azure Site Recovery for data and application availability with minimal RTO and RPO
  • Integration with most popular third-party software releases, including Microsoft® Server, Microsoft® Hyper-V and VMware® vSphere®
  • Backup Exec can be seamlessly scaled to the cloud with a range of certified, integrated cloud connectors for various cloud environments, including AWS S3, Microsoft® Azure and Google Cloud Platform Storage
  • Users can locate and visualize their data estate to support General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other privacy regulations, using Veritas Information Mapâ„¢
  • End-to-end deduplication performance to on-premise storage, as well as to public and hybrid cloud

Veritas Backup Exec has been used in our datacenter to backup our servers, approximately more than 10 servers, including servers with VMWare. We have programmed an automatic backup routine with incremental backups every day of file servers and other services used by employees and daily backups of all services and the datacenter environment. It is an expensive investment but it is the best way to keep all data saved in case of any type of problem / damage / virtual threat.
  • Accurate and seamless integration with VMware.
  • Possibility to replicate to the cloud.
  • When necessary, restoration to a specific point is quick and safe.
  • Clean and friendly interface.
  • Great Alerts and personalized reports.
Cons
  • Updates happen frequently but are not so easy to perform.
  • Providing more training for beginners.
One of the differentials is that of all the backup tools I used, Veritas Backup Exec has the best management and control interface. It is very easy to use and configure the rules. There are several options that we can optimize our work for our specific needs, from scheduling a backup, restoring data, directories, alerts system, error reports, backups, inconsistencies and other very interesting things. It has integration with SQL, vmware, hyper v. Backup and restore speeds are fast and secure.

Backup Exec is our single source for data backup.

Symantec Backup Exec is being used on our server for the whole organization. BE provides protection for our data, gives us security knowing our information is being backed up safely and securely. Performance is excellent, restoring lost data is simple and accurate. Support for restoring downed servers by system recovery is a feature and process that is important to our organization.
  • Fast and accurate backups
  • Easy to install, configure and manage
  • Works well across many backup options
Cons
  • For our use, we are fine as it is.
Internal and external server backup as well as cloud solutions. Based on our needs BE is very well suited.

We are using Symantec Backup Exec to backup our Windows servers.
  • Backup Exec is good for defining backup strategy across multiple supports (external hdd and tapes for us).
  • Backup Exec is good at backing up all data including files with open handles.
  • Restoring a single file to a previous version is very easy.
Cons
  • Finding the most performant driver for our tape recorded in Windows Server environment was not easy.
  • It took several years with help of the Symantec support to find the appropriate driver.
  • Symantec support service was not so responsive and did not really provide a permanent solution to our problems, but it really improved in the last few years.
Backup Exec is a nice tool to backup Windows servers and workstations.

We use backup exec to backup our mostly virtual server environment.
  • It works sometimes.
Cons
  • Can't intuitively chain backup jobs.
  • Forever incremental backup feature is limited and basically useless, feels tacked on.
  • Storage based compression and de-duplication are awkward to manage compared to other backup solutions.
  • Convoluted licensing model.
  • Poor fault tolerance.
Backup Exec probably works well if you're only backing up a small number of servers (around 20 at the most) locally. This seems to be the only scenario where its at least capable of doing its job.

Any kind of serious enterprise is going to want to avoid this software like the plague. Deploying this across multiple sites requires fully licensed servers at each site and a second management server at the primary site. Beyond that, running multiple backup jobs can be problematic as, per Veritas support, there is no native way to chain separate backup jobs.

Veritas Backup Exec has been used by our company for many years now. Our whole IT department uses it. It is extremely reliable, easy to install, configure and maintain. One of its strongest points would be that it supports an array of legacy devices. The GUI is very user-friendly, restore speeds are incredible!
  • Very easy to install and configure.
  • Extremely user friendly.
  • Restore speeds are incredible.
Cons
  • Very expensive.
  • Could have more expanded features.
Veritas Backup Exec is well suited for any type of business environment. It has saved me countless hours of time, the restore options and speeds are simply incredible. I would definitely recommend this backup/restore solution to any company IT department looking to upgrade their existing solution, especially if your company uses legacy hardware.
