We are use it across our subsidiaries within ICT department and we are managing all backups related to databases and mostly VMWARE environment. We are managing 100s of tape icluding LTO4 and LTO6 for off site backups. More than 100 VMs are protect across the environment which includes thick and thin VMs.

  • Centralised Backup Solution
  • Easy to use for administrator
  • Expendable in case of storages
  • Hardware Independent
  • Flexible Licenses
  • Reliable Infrastructure
  • Independent storage solution
  • Integration with almost every Database
  • Integration with Virtual Environment
  • Graphical representation of Storage
  • OPS CENTER provide detailed reporting
  • Admin console
  • SAP HANA application Templates should also be introduced instead of scripting
  • SAP MAXDB application template should also be introduced
  • Tape Management need improvement
  • MOBILE connectivity is missing
  • Admin console is so simple it should be more funcky or stylish
  • Small database should also be considered for backup
Netbackup is suited for every environment like Windows, Linux, Suse, Red Hat, Oracle, SQL, SAP, MySQL, Mongo DB, VM, BMR.

For SMEs veritas would be an expensive solution because its an enterprise level solution may not be recommended for smaller organization. Backup administrator with high skill may requied for such solution which is also not affordable by them.

NetBackup lets you back up, archive, and restore files, folders or directories, and volumes or partitions that reside on your computer. During a restore, users can browse, then select the files and directories to recover.

Veritas NetBackup is very expensive, and I think price is the main reason which some customers don't want to use this solution. The price is fair. Most people have felt this solution was somewhat expensive. licensing model is based on the number of NetBackup clients, agents, servers, and options that NetBackup will be protecting or run on. A customer purchases the same number of licenses as the count of clients, agents, servers, and options.
Veritas is totally independent of hardware like other solutions and its licenses are very flexible.

Pricing is competitive [with] other products in the market and it meets all the requirements of medium business like us. Very easy to learn how to use it, so it is easy for our new team members to familiarize [themselves with] the software. Easy in restoring the files or data.

NetBackup is used to perform automated file level and disk level backups of all Enterprise servers. It is primarily used by the IT department but is also available to other departments as a service. The Enterprise Storage team provides this service to allow for the restoration of servers in the event of data loss or corruption. This is an invaluable tool for both business continuity and disaster recovery.
  • Full Backup
  • Incremental Backup
  • File Level Restore
  • OS level restore for VMware
  • When an error in the backup process occurs, manual intervention is usually necessary by the Server Administrator.
  • Some Virtual Machine servers cannot be backed up while online.
  • User client is a little clumsy while attempting to access files for restore.
NetBackup is a great product for Enterprise Servers managed by a large IT department. It is not the best solution for individual users as it doesn't do the file syncs similar to Microsoft OneDrive. It does a great job of allowing the end user to manage his/her own file restores without having to wait for the Backup Administrator to be involved. However, full OS restores to a separate location are slightly more complex.

  • When data is lost, we are able to quickly restore and return to normal business.
  • When an application upgrade fails we are able to go back to a known good state.
  • Large restores are slow at times, so be sure to plan for this in your recovery point objective.
CrashPlan has the capability to sync data with a cloud storage source. This is great for a workstation where data is typically only for one user. However, Netbackup does a much better job for maintaining multiple levels of file restores for Enterprise Servers. Netbackup has a superior management console that does not rely on Cloud services in the event of an internet outage.

Before Netbackup we were running BackupExec writing directly to LTO5 tape drives. In spring of 2014 we evaluated NBU and Commvault. Both products would meet the needs of modernizing our environment, however in the end NBU was the more economical choice. We chose to implement NBU, with a 86tb backend Netapp 2240-4 and SpectraLogic T110 LTO6 tape library. Since its implementation in spring of 2014 NBU has allowed us to more reliably backup our Oracle environment and other filesystems. The use of MSDP pools extended the amount of capacity we had for backup and the ability to create policies to automatically move data from disk to tape has decreased the amount of time for backups and restores by 50%.
  • The activity monitor allows me to easily see if there are issues with backup jobs or the environment.
  • Community support for NBU is very good. I've been able to research issues with ease and find other users that have been in similar situations.
  • Policy management for backups is very easy and there are lots of options.
  • Limited 60tb MSDP per media server is a frustrating limitation. I have an 86tb san that I cannot leverage all the space on.
  • A refresh of the GUI is needed. There are menus within menus and it is sometimes difficult to find what you are looking for.
  • Creating someone type of FAQ for newer administrators would be useful. I'm sure I have run across a bunch of questions that have been asked 50 times before.
Like most enterprise backup applications, Symantec NetBackup (NBU) suffers from complexity. Using and understanding advanced features can be challenging at times. Real world experience is needed to know if they are worth the time to implement. On the other hand I have found NBU relativity easy to use with a little training from just a simple backup scheduling and restore perspective.

  • Modernized our Oracle backup processes. They are now more reliable and have reduced recovery times by 50%.
  • Limited MSDP pools have forced me to look at buying more licenses.
  • Good support and community makes NBU easier to support.
We selected NBU based solely on cost. When comparing NBU and Commvault, NBU was 10k cheaper in the end and contained roughly the same features as Commvault.
