I use it in all aspects - what modules do we have, what are we not using, what happens if we change this process - how will it affect the GL. I'm pushing strongly to get the mobile app rolled out to our team ASAP. I have done a lot of reading and researching.
  • Crystal is the easiest report writer I have ever used.
  • Multiple ways to break down the Chart of Accounts makes cost analysis a breeze.
  • Vista is very user friendly. I have never had to repeat training someone or "how-to" = they get it the first time because the system is very intuitive
  • We are a quarry, and we fall under the "mining" category, but our business is just enough different from the normal contractor's business that we've had to create work arounds in processes so that we can track everything we need to.
  • The speed since we've moved to the cloud is very slow - however, that could be where we are located.
  • phases, cost types, pay types, etc = there are so many was to break things down but if you are coming from a company with a standard GL, the account structure on Vista is a little difficult to wrap my head around.
I know there are positive points, as I was telling my boss earlier this week how amazing it is that we don't have to do a lot of the things I did at a previous company. I do feel that Vista could do a lot to make the correction process in Material Sales simpler than it currently is. I absolutely love the "grid". Amazing to me.

I use the Vista software and the Viewpoint HR Management to support other user users mostly. When in need I seem to be the one everyone comes to for problem solving whether it's how the software is performing or something doesn't look right and needs fixed. Once we went to the cloud my involvement with taking care of the database was moved to Viewpoint's responsibility and left me to concentrate more on reporting and problem solving.
  • The ability to create your own user defined tables to collect data that is not already collected within the software
  • The ability for employees to manage and view their employee records and data through the Vista HR Management module along with the timekeeping piece
  • To help users manage resources and better plan equipment maintenance and purchases in the future based on past data collected
  • Figure out a way to improve the cloud speed experience for data entry users
  • More hands on and real life examples training videos not just videos of what the software can do and not give examples. I realize all companies are different but more examples for setup in both Vista and HR Management would be beneficial
  • Support not to be so vague in their email answers when a support ticket is put in.
The company has made a commitment to the use of the Vista products and continue to move forward trying to implement more with the Vista HR Management. From timekeeping to onboarding in the near future we strive to look for better ways to utilize the products for our accounting and payroll purposes.

Personally I use Vista daily, I do Human Resources and Payroll so a lot of my job functions out of Vista. Vista has come a long way with their updates and functionality. One of the best parts of Vista is the Knowledge Base, typically I can find answers to the issues I run into with the knowledge base and not have to create a case. The knowledge bases' are in depth and provide step by step with screen shots on how to correct an issue. Even when a case is created, I have never ran into a specialist who is not friendly and helpful!
  • Knowledge Base
  • Reporting Functionality
  • Staying Current with Todays times (payroll and HR)
  • Filtering Down on the grids, giving more options
It is well suited on the Human Resources aspects - being able to keep everything one one employee in one spot. Such as, salary histories, training histories, discipline, the capability to be paperless by having attachment lister. It eliminates having to have multiple places for HR Documents, you can also secure attachments where certain people only have access.

We use Vista for Project Management, Contracts, Subcontracts, Change Orders, Job Costing, Job Billing, AP/AR, General Ledger, and HR.
Vista is best suited to store data, that's about it. It isn't easy to learn or train on, the user interface is outdated, reports are all made to be printed and aren't interactive, finding and retrieving data isn't intuitive, there are no user dashboards, importing data is cumbersome, and there is no API. I rarely use the reports in the program, easier to query the db directly to get what I need.

Vista is our company ERP and has been since 2008. We use Vista for all our accounting and payroll needs. We also integrate with it for our service management software and for our in-house developed project management app.
  • Calculation of job cost and revenue.
  • Processing of payroll and payroll taxes
  • Ability to add new fields to forms and database that don't already exist
  • As with any complex program, there are a lot of moving pieces, so it is complex to set up or alter.
  • Job and Phase mask must be set up on installation, and apply to all companies within the system. (We added a new division that needed different numbering mask, but it wasn't an option)
  • Can take a while for bugs found in releases to be resolved.
The ability to customize the software by adding fields, dropdowns, forms, tables, and custom reports is extensive. However, having Viewpoint provide support or assist in setting these up can be expensive. We do most of this in house, since we are familiar with Vista and have IT who have supported the product for 15 years.

I have used almost all parts of Vista, currently I work in HR management and Payroll. The addition of the HR management system has been a game changer for us, being able to onboard with the employee portal and having the field be able to input their own time with up to date jobs and phases has been instrumental in the processing of payroll. As with any software there are always issues and things that we would like done better, having the suggestion box is wonderful because it gives you the ability to see what issues and suggestions others are having. As an organization we use almost every part of Vista with the exception of inventory and material management. We are currently in the process of adding the service management system. We recently moved to the cloud, that has been an interesting transition.
  • Onboarding - this has been a huge change for us, we no longer have to manually enter the employees information, now we just initialize and were done.
  • Billing - the processing of the T&M invoices and template set up
  • Timecard entry using the portal- This has saved the payroll department hours of time when we had to manually key the time.
  • The new reporting format now that we are on the cloud, its very slow and not as easy to use as the onpriem version is. We also can't run large reports without timing out.
  • Onboarding, would be wonderful if the documents attached to payroll in addition to HR or instead of HR
  • Labor categories - only allowing one craft class code combination to be used, instead of allowing the same combination to be used under different labor categories.
  • Error messages - fix the systems so that you don't receive the same error message 4 or 5 times. We get it after the first time we don't need to be told over and over again.
I think Vista is a great software and easy to use, I can only speak for the specialty contractor side of things as that is all I have ever used it in. I think the addition of Aatrix was a good call even though I was not happy with it to start, I found that it really saved me a ton of time and processing.

Full accounting software with implementation for Job Cost, Equipment, Billings, Project Management, etc.
  • Intercompany Transactions
  • Job Costing
  • Invoice Review
  • Job Billing
  • Subcontract & PO Billing & Tracking
  • Project Management (Change Orders, Minutes, Logs, Submittals)
  • Fixed Asset/Depreciation Schedules
From my perspective, Vista is an exceptional software all around! It is relatively easy to navigate. Many of the project teams find it challenging to use because they may not use certain areas as often as I do. It is a massive and overwhelming software, which I think frightens new users and frustrates them from getting in and exploring.

Fully utilized in Accounting, Equipment Management, Job Costing, Human Resources, Purchasing, T&M Billing, and partially utilized for Project Management. We use most of the available modules.
  • T&M Invoicing flexibility
  • Payroll processing strong & flexible
  • Ability to customize fields, forms, reports
  • Trust of the company management has deteriorated over the years. Hoping the that Trimble buyout will improve, but it is yet to be seen.
  • Support has been much worse than early years. Releases have had more issues than 5-10 years ago.
  • Many of the key personnel that "owned" the product previously are gone.
  • Rapidly increasing pricing of support / software assurance every year; Motivation seems to have switched from offering a best quality product to a money-making machine with the buyout of competitors

I use Viewpoint Vista on a daily basis working in our accounting department. I heavily use the AP, AR, CM, JC, JB and PM modules but often use others. This product allows the company, specifically the accounting department to keep track of all invoicing, billings, reconciliations, and forecasts. Vista addresses any variances.
  • Provides necessary reports for each module
  • Updates reports and programs at users request
  • Creates new programs to continue innovation
  • Functionality of adding attachments within DM
  • Accessibility of new features
Vista is well suited within the accounts payable, accounts receivable and cash management modules. The project management module and accessibility of users within the field lacks.

  • It works most of the time.
  • Better UI

  • More Tips and Tricks webinars
  • Optimization for project field staff
Great for office personnel, Field personnel say that Vista is almost unusable in the job trailer due to slow internet speeds in rural job site areas.

Track cost - accounting - payables purchase orders - projections
  • Payroll system is outstanding. Easy to enter time and send out paycheck stubs.
  • Issuing purchase orders. Track budgets for individual jobs.
  • WIP reports, timely financial data.
  • Areas of improvement: equipment program use and trying to find solution through learning.
  • Imports: not as easy as the knowledge based leads on.
  • Crystal Reports is confusing even after completing the training on the subject.
The real-time data and the ease of use. Cost are post once invoices have been approved.
The excellent customer service - fast turnover with issues -
Viewpoint Knowledge Base - wide range of answers

My company uses Vista for accounting, such as invoices and statements. We use it to also keep track of payments and vendors. Vista is very helpful when I cannot find an answer on how to do something, I can usually find it on vista, through questions other users may have or through the academy.
  • Spreading information
  • Answering questions very quickly (response time)
  • Making learning about construction more interesting
  • The academy
  • Specific area to ask questions about any topic (related to construction)
There have been time when I created a batch using vista and I ran into the problem of not putting it into the correct area. Rather than having to restart, I looked into my problem on Vista and quickly found the solution. It saved me a ton of time, so I was able to get back to my work quicker.

Our company uses Vista for virtually all aspects of finance. The most complex feature that Vista helps tackle is PR since we process manually due to unions. There are a couple of issues with the software such as forced 3rd party partner integration (extra fees), faulty updates, and limited scope in terms of consolidating companies.
  • Payroll
  • Support and Articles (website structure is so confusing)
  • Tested Updates
  • Allow more cross company reports
Vista is a good software however, there are a ton of 3rd party partner softwares required when trying to conquer new projects.

I use Viewpoint in a variety of ways. I regularly use their Payroll, HR, AP, AR, Cash Management, Job Cost, Equipment, and General ledger modules. The learning curve for Viewpoint was steep at the beginning, but after using it for almost two years the knowledge is invaluable. There are many resources to help you understand the software and become more comfortable with the programs and reports you will use. For almost any issue there is a program or report you can use in Viewpoint that will allow you to extract or locate the information you are looking for. Once you are familiar with the reports, you can find anything you will need. Viewpoint tracks payroll information and tax information very effectively and allows you to access it easily and without hassle.
  • Their reports are very helpful in looking at different areas. Specifically for me, I can look at timecards, payroll for the week, or look at specific people/accounts for the month or year. The reports make it easy to find the information you are looking for.
  • Set up is quite simple in most cases. Once you have set up, for example, a deduction, liability, or earning code you can update them as needed without any issues.
  • Most of the programs are straight forward and easy to use. Once you know where to go, you can do anything with them. It makes data collection very simple.
  • Viewpoint can be quite slow on some of their programs. It can take a long time to process or extract information that you need.
  • Viewpoint updates regularly, but their updates usually result in messing up another process.
  • Their reports can provide too much information or not be specific enough. In most cases they are fine, but in the equipment module specifically, they can be lacking.
Viewpoint is definitely for the construction industry. It works very well at tracking jobs, sub-jobs, employees, taxes, etc. If you are in the construction industry then I think Viewpoint is a good option if you are looking for an all-inclusive ERP system. Viewpoint integrates with a lot of other companies which makes life even easier when it comes to all of the complexities of construction accounting. It integrates well with programs like Geotab or Emburse Chrome River. I don't think it would be very appropriate for a smaller company, it is definitely there to help manage the chaos of a medium to large sized company.

With Vista I use it to enter payments, create invoices, setup contracts, projects, and jobs. I create reports which I send throughout the organization and update a variety of records with our customers. Vista helps with making all of these processes faster. Having to do all of these processes by hand takes a lot longer than having programs that automatically put transactions to the correct places and it helps make reports quickly.
  • Creating Reports
  • Processing Payments
  • Creating Contracts
  • Vista can be slow sometimes causing processes which takes seconds to take a minute or two
  • Sometimes it will crash when using a report multiple times in a single session or random crash
  • With there are a couple programs constantly get bombarded with errors that need closed constantly to continue to the next step, but a majority of them work just fine.
Vista is a good program if you are working in construction as it has an array of programs that can be used to help manage that type of business, especially if you have several employees. Vista is not really suited for industries such as retail or even a small business with a few employees.

We use Viewpoint across our whole organization (minus workers in the field). We are in the Process of Implementing Field Management where we will have even more users inputting data into the system. Viewpoint allows us to track costs, quantities, and so much more from the field. We then can calculate cost and revenue projections at project completion to make sure we are staying on budget. We input data into many different places, and all of that information can feed into one report that gives us a snapshot of how each project is doing month to month. Update - we have implemented Field Management and it has been going well. It takes so much time away from processing payroll in the office, so that is helpful. Also limiting what time can be coded to is beneficial and prevents many mistakes and miscodes.
  • Customer Support via Clearview. The ability to research issues we are having and try to resolve them ourselves through Clearview is invaluable. I have often been researching one issue or hang up I was having, and learned a few other things I didn't know through this system.
  • Customization of reports - the ability to have reports written in this system to give us access to information all on one report is great! There are so many standard Viewpoint reports as well.
  • Ease of fixing mistakes. Being able to bring something that has been posted back into a batch to fix has been wonderful as we are all human and make mistakes. There are not too many times that we actually have to call Viewpoint for support when we cannot fix something ourselves.
  • Writing Crystal Reports is not easy. You either have to have someone really knowledgeable on staff or source it out. Sometimes it can be pricey for custom reports.
  • Support callbacks. It depends on the time of year, but sometimes it takes a week to get a call back if it is not "Urgent".
  • PO Receipts Module. We gave this a try at our company and it has been a pretty big disaster. We are trying to "undo" it all now because it is not functioning how we envisioned. And there is not much information out there on it. It's almost as if it was an afterthought and not developed very far.
  • As someone else mentioned, error loops. Trying to figure out what module or program the error was made in, and undo the mistake to keep moving forward can be so time consuming!
Vista integrates well with our estimating software. I am in charge of dumping budgets from HCSS into Viewpoint and formatting it all. Most of the time, it doesn't take a whole lot of work to get it set up. Cost tracking is incredible in Viewpoint. We can always figure out what our cost is at a given month by running reports. Also with projecting future costs and revenue to determine our profit on any particular project.

Vista by Viewpoint is being used as the primary Accounting and Job Costing software for the entire organization. It solves the need for record keeping, vendor payments, Human Resources, payroll, Billing & Collections, Cash Management, Inventory, Purchasing, Service, GL, Job Costing and Project Management. It also serves as the solutions for managing subcontractors, vendors, customers. Also, it is our main document management resource.
  • The one-stop-shop mentality has been the number one reason our organization continues to utilize Vista by Viewpoint.
  • We also appreciate the continued effort to become a more efficient platform with a shift to providing more resources for the field.
  • Lastly, we appreciate the customer support. It has come a long way in the last 10 years; however, their support has remained in line with their growth.
  • There are times, where I had a question on how to set something up because Vista is very customizable; however, it's considered billable time; so I end up having to figure it out on my own in order to avoid the added expense.
  • Sometimes I think there are too many forms in order to get something set up. There seems to be a lot of open and closing. It would be nice if some of the processes were consolidated into one form.
  • Sometimes the sales staff can be over the top. I probably get at least 3-5 sales calls from Viewpoint every month for additional features/products that they are offering.
Viewpoint is well suited for a one-stop-shop Accounting and PM Accounting software program. I would say Vista would be less appropriate for smaller contractors who do less volume. Viewpoint offers other software programs for subcontractors or general contractors who have revenue amounts less than $10 - $20M per year or so.

Vista is currently being used by our Accounting, Admin, and Division team leaders. Division leaders use the Job Cost and PM modules for project accounting. The implementation of Keystyles has allowed us to provide all of our employees access to information inside Vista such as earnings, W2, personal information changes, timecard entry.
  • Job cost accounting.
  • Payroll.
  • Project Management.
  • Web-based platform.
  • Mobile applications.
  • Document management.
Vista is a very robust accounting package and job cost modules. Definitely well suited for large contractors, specifically heaving highway customers. Vista is less appropriate for smaller companies and subcontractors.

We use Vista as our ERP. Our operations team also uses the product for project management. It is used at our corporate level for accounting and payroll. Each branch uses it for purchasing.
  • Purchase orders by Job. You can manually upload large POs rather than typing them out line by line.
  • Reporting. Vista comes with many valuable reports. You can also create custom reports and design anything you might need.
  • AR/AP transactions are easy to create and track.
  • Security setup. There are many places to remember to add/remove and update securities. It would make more sense to have one place.
  • Standard Reports: depending upon the tables that are pulling data, the financial numbers can be different. You must really know what you are looking at and for to understand what the report is including.
  • Customer Support: Many times it takes several responses back and forth before the issue is escalated or resolved.
If you only needed an ERP, Vista does a good job. My main reason for scoring a 4, is the product sales reps really push a complete product umbrella with Viewpoint One. They push for Vista to be in the cloud and sell the other products such as TEAM and Field View which are not a complete product yet.

Our company uses Vista for Project Management and Financials. The ability to coordinate both project management and accounting and the link between the two has greatly reduced accounting errors and reporting is much more accurate. We utilize both modules on a daily basis and rely heavily on reporting functions. The products are generally used by upper management, accounting, and project-level managers.

  • Accurate link between project management and accounting
  • Payroll functions
  • online customer portal help. Very hard to find specific answers due to the overwhelming amount of information
  • how to guides - these are generally provided by other users and are more specific to their own organizations.
  • help with updates - responsibility is on the user with little support help unless you want to pay $$$
Vista is specifically suited for construction firms with $10M or higher revenue - I believe it would be too aggressive of a program for smaller companies. General Contracting firms are also a great fit as it is designed to manage numerous subcontractors on a given project. It also allows you to create different companies to handle accounting functions in a variety of ways over multiple projects.

We use Vista by Viewpoint for project costing, payroll, invoicing, etc. As a construction firm, [we use] Vista by Viewpoint tracking project costs, subcontracts, and change orders. Having all of this data in custom reports helps track the costs effectively.
  • Custom reports
  • Financial accuarcy
  • Managing change orders
  • Hard to learn to use
  • RFI, Submittals, Drawing logs
  • Not being able to integrate with field operations
Vista by Viewpoint is good for cost reporting. Vista by Viewpoint is not that great for project management and field integration. We use separate software to manage the project.

We used [Vista by] Viewpoint on a day-to-day basis for the day-to-day work. From using it to keep our invoices for accounts payable up to date and to keep our vendors and subcontractors records and provide [an] efficient payment schedule, to using it enter in time for each of our employees out in the field and in the office and making sure hours are recorded and employees paid.
  • Maintaining records
  • User friendly on step by step entry
  • Interacting with different departments
  • Ability to modify to meet company needs
  • Provide a responsive support team for immediate issues
  • Allowing more controls for users
A majority of what our company does and provides is using [Vista by] Viewpoint daily to keep track and maintain records for each project we work on. From daily time tracking of each employee to cost tracking for each project. We have not had a use that did not meet our needs as of yet.

Vista by Viewpoint is our main accounting and project management software through our finance, preconstruction, and operations departments. We utilize it to create and issue purchase orders, change orders, subcontracts, billings, and use it for reporting on the overall health of our projects in the system. This system is used daily to monitor job costs as well.
  • Unlimited Capabilities
  • Robust Program
  • Reports for everything
  • The training needed is extensive to utilize all aspects of the program.
  • The portal itself is very Windows 2000
  • The help offered when encountering a problem is not always quick
Vista by Viewpoint is surely a accounting-based program. It is more aimed at the financial health and wellness reporting on a project rather than a day-to-day operations system. This is great for internal office employees that understand the accounting behind a construction project and how it affects the success of the build. This is not a program used for field employees to know where the project stands.
