We utilize VMware across our entire organization including our production data center locations as well as our corporate office locations. VMware ESXi has changed our business practices positively in every way. It has allowed us to break the strings attached between the hardware layer and OSE layer and has allowed us significant flexibility in regards to update time of our products and services.
  • Better uptime
  • Easier scheduled maintenance windows when an outage is needed
  • Consolidation of server hardware
  • Flexibility
Cons
  • License Costs
  • Better email notification support of host hardware usage or failure
  • Better email notification support of guest OSE disk usage / system resources / thresholds
VMware ESXi will dramatically help any business consolidate their existing physical server environments by utilizing better usage of host system resources which will, in turn, save on rack space costs, server costs, and energy / heat by combining those server OSEs into virtualized environments that can allow the usage of multiple OSEs on each host server.

VMware ESXi is used to host our server farms, it provides us with high availability and optimizes the use of our hardware, allowing us to better use the available hardware. The high availability part comes into play when hardware failures occur or maintenance is required. Allowing the virtual servers to be moved easily to different hosts.
  • High Availability
  • Resource management
  • Hardware virtualization
Cons
  • The licenses policy are not very rigid and the best options are stuck behind the most expensive license.
  • Configuration management is limited versus some other products currently on the market.
  • Better/simpler automation would be great, for example automated ways of doing blue green would be very welcome.
VMware has been the standard for years regarding server virtualization. They are still the best in this field, providing a very solid platform with well-tested features. If you are running your applications on classical servers and have not made the jump to the container space yet, ESXi is a great solution for your needs.

We use VMware ESXi on various HPE hosts for our server and client virtualization in combination with GPU cards. ESXi is a powerful piece of software that is capable of hosting a large amount of VM's with a very small management footprint. Is is very stable, consumes few resources, and [is] easy, or let's better say, very easy to install. For most of the big vendors, you can find predefined custom images with all necessary drivers etc. for the appropriate HW usage.
  • Very small resource footprint.
  • Easy to manage.
  • Very easy to install.
  • Capable of hosting large environments.
  • Manage large amount of networks (VLAN's, etc.).
Cons
  • There is nothing really to add.
  • With some releases there were some minor issues.
Like said before, VMware ESXI is clearly only usable for hosting large environments but can for sure also handle small environments and as it is easy to install and easy to manage. It [is tough] to say where it should be less appropriate. It is OS open, you can use it for Windows, Linux but for sure also for other operation systems. For me it's the host virtualization Swiss Army knife

We use VMware ESXi in our local data center to run all the on-premise virtual machines with ease. We can deploy or clone machines in a second, manage them perfectly as well as maintain backups and all our hyper-converged infrastructure through the VMware plugin, hence it has become the heart of our data center.
  • Best on-premise data center hypervisor.
  • Stability of the platform.
  • Security in all the needed aspects.
Cons
  • Web interface is sometimes laggy.
  • Licenses are not very cheap.
  • Automation can be improved.
Great for "old fashioned" companies like us that mostly still use on-premise infrastructure. But on the good side once we decide to move to the cloud, it will also be great to manage cloud infra as well with the hybrid cloud and multi cloud focus nowadays. Really cannot think of data center scenario where VMware would not fit in.

VMware ESXi is used for server virtualization across our whole organization. We are approximately 85 percent virtualized. It allows us to utilize less server space, power, and cooling while allowing us to quickly spin up more servers. We have also included some desktop virtualization in our organization. It allows for much more efficient management of our servers.
  • Allows our organization to spin up needed servers in a short time based upon pre-staged templates.
  • Make for simplified updates on hosts with migration features.
  • Space, Power, and cooling requirements have been dramatically reduced because we have been able to remove older servers and replaced with fewer more efficient server hosts.
Cons
  • Would like all the functions including updating be all in one client instead requiring the fat client for Update Manger.
  • Web client is still a little slow.
It is awesome for server virtualization when trying to reduce servers.
