WatchGuard is one of the leaders in the Gartner magic quadrant and gives extreme confort to the client when protected by WatchGuard firewalls.
  • Traffic Inspection
  • Active Directory User Identification
  • SSL VPN
  • Logs are user oriented
  • Possibility of policy duplicate
Watchguard is well suited for Perimeter security on SMB but is less appropriate for Enterprise scenarios. Not because of lack of features / resources but lack of market to justificate that same trust.

Currently utilizing Watch Guard Network Security for internal and external network security, Virtual Private Network, rules, IP, and geographical based routing. Watch Guard Network Security provides for all the aforementioned as well as real time network monitoring. There are some issues with failover clustering but workarounds have been made to ensure failover clustering is performed in the event of a node failure of the primary.
  • Rules based routing
  • VPN
  • Network Traffic monitoring
  • Geographical inclusion and exclusions
  • Failover clustering configuration
  • Customer Support
  • Updates
Watch Guard Network Security is well suited for internal as well as external network security, providing for a Virtual Private Network, rules, IP, and geographical based routing. Watch Guard Network Security provides for all the aforementioned as well as real time network monitoring. Good for small to medium sized businesses, but additional analytical functionality may be required for larger businesses.

WatchGuard Network Security is a fantastic product, one of which I'd readily recommend to others looking for a dedicated hardware solution. It's easily accessible for newcomers with all the information provided online, and readily customizable to fit in near any situation. We currently use it to maintain branch office communications, and have had no issues building it out more as the organization grows.
  • Very Robust Documentation for Integrating WatchGuard across multiple apps
  • Detailed Training Program available for Certification
  • Easy to backup and restore with minimal downtime
  • Hardware/Software Naming Conventions - High Availability makes me think of stock, not hot swapping
  • In my experience, it's difficulty in finding credible resellers
  • Lack of Licensing Information - What License does Which
WatchGuard Network Security can find a home within any new enterprise security solution - it definitely works better for smaller environments from my experience, however, I can see it scaling well with larger groups. The amount of documentation provided by WatchGuard Network Security is staggering compared to that of similar competitors, and I can near always find the answer that I'm looking for quickly and easily. Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised how detailed the configurations within the Firebox allowed me to go, which has greatly increased our security structure to the rest of the world. That said, the licensing that comes alongside it may limit usability, so additional consideration to which license one should use and the associated cost may make some purchasing decisions a bit more complicated.

I use the WatchGuard Network Security for their security features, protecting us from the outside. I also will use the VPN capabilities, but mainly for myself and one or two others that access the sites remotely.
  • Protection from the outside world
  • Numerous updates daily to security definitions
  • VPN access is very easy
  • Sometimes the firewall rules are a bit confusing as far as Cloning and Creating, but that could just be me
Great for small and medium companies, provides a lot of piece of mind with little configuration for a non-techy office, or without adequate support.
It isn't needed in a home or even one or two person office.

Primary external protection, VPN reporting, tunneling, all the basic use that a company would deploy this product for.
  • Site to Site
  • VPN
  • Security
  • User implementation having all options selectable with a drop down list box would be stellar. The current method is well layed out already though
I have no suggestions for this area, as it does everything as expected.

The company has multiple WatchGuard firewalls deployed in various sites. It is the first line of defense. Watch Guard has been around for many years. I think I have been using them at least 20 years. I started with a Sonic Wall, then Astaro, then Watchguard. It has been Watch Guard ever since.

It has all of the functions of a firewall.

Port Forwarding to the cameras.
I use it for my DHCP.
Traffic Monitor to determine why someone can't connect to a website or remote computer via remote desktop.
VPN Box connections to various sites.

Greatest function, is that I can create different user accountants that limit their Internet capabilities. Account 1 is allows Internet Browsing only and filters many sites. NO downloads are 1allowed. Account 2 has less web filtering, NO downloads allowed. Account 3 for the Network admin. Downloading is allowed.

There tech support staff is fantastic. As they look at the issues, they explain to me how to do this myself if needed.

I personally recommend people to consider Watch Guard.
  • Traffic Monitor with error descriptions
  • User management that restricts users access. With Over-Ride of restrictions capability
  • Easy to learn how to manage the firewall
  • In the past HTTPS browsing slowed the users response to websites. Don't know if it was rectified.
I have no issues with Watch Guard. My reseller would only recommend it up to medium size companies. (several hundred employees)

We are all at the mercy of those who would like to steal from us and misuse personal data. Early on, I realized that I needed to place a "firewall" between my local area network and the outside world—the Internet. Time and time again, careful inspection of incoming attempts at breaking in to our local network has proven to me that the WatchGuard system does a super job of blocking unwanted intrusion and helping to prevent our users from accidentally going to malicious web sites. This protects our employees and guests in ways that they would not expect - working behind the scenes to keep them safe without interfering with their use of the Internet. This is the Internet as it was meant to be: easy and safe. I've been in the computer field for 50 years and very glad to have invested in the WatchGuard solution.
  • Incoming Torrent attempts were blocked, but outgoing (by a user) were permitted. Similarly, other direct attempts were summarily blocked.
  • provides full administrative support for analysis of usage and scope.
  • strong Wi-Fi support and security - area wi-fi maps
  • They think of all the things secure and I don't have to worry about it.
  • I have not identified anything else that needs improvement - I am well satisfied.
  • While I do have a third party (reseller) to turn to for administrative support, the user interface might be more user-friendly to first-time users.
For first-time users, the basic setup provides the best level of security that most will need. Following their periodic webinars is something that I feel is very helpful and important to communicate what's going on in the World of computing. Their resellers have provided great support when I needed it and keep my system up-to-date.

We protect clients local and cloud networks with it. There is a lot of PII at many of the firms we handle and we need to protect exposure of this data.
  • Easy To Configure
  • Regular Updates
  • Good Tech Support
  • Mobile client for programming units
Small, medium and possibly large enterprise (but we don't handle those) are all well served by these robust products that are well supported.

  • easy to initial.
  • easy to setup and configure.

  • no subscription
  • the security rules management with the custom services isnt convenient
  • more security
It's good for small and medium companies less than 100 users and not appropriate for large company like over 1000.

Because we work in advertising and marketing, it is important for our customers to trust and feel their business assets are safe and secure with us. In this world of sometimes working remotely we know our data--and our customer's data--is safe from outsiders yet lets us be flexible in where we work.
  • User accountability and verification
  • Flagging potential risks to security
  • It would be nice to have a quick override, for situations where we know the flagged risk and can easily dismiss it based on our knowledge.
Because we hold clients' assets during a project, we want to be sure we care keeping it safe from ransomwear, and WatchGuard is perfect for this scenario. And in this world of growing malwear threats, it's always good--along with good common sense-- to have a safety net that can filter out potential threats.

We use WatchGuard Network Security both internally and at most of our clients to provide a secure network firewall that balances ease of configuration and maintenance with a high level of functionality and security. Over the last 8 years I have deployed dozens of WatchGuard appliances and we've been highly impressed with the reliability they've provided, with under 5 units requiring service, and all of those were replaced quickly by WatchGuard to minimize downtime.
  • Ease of configuration
  • Reliability
  • Security
  • Network Functionality
  • Configuration of security controls can be unclear at times.
  • Cloud management is a great addition but could use a little fine tuning.
  • Smaller appliances don't have simultaneous dual-band Wifi
I have honestly not found a situation where WatchGuard was unsuitable, previously I would have said that their Gateway Wireless Controller on the Firebox was less than ideal for managing larger numbers of WAP's, however their cloud management systems now puts this functionality in the cloud and the information and control provided are far better than they used to be. Otherwise, I've deployed WatchGuard appliances in a wide variety of locations, from traditional business offices, to hotels, to a distributed SCADA network, and they've performed well everywhere.

We use WatchGuard firewalls with WatchGuard Network Security to secure and connect all 4 of our primary business locations with secure branch office VPN tunnels keeping all locations securely connected at all times. The configuration interface for these firewalls is so simple yet it produces the same level of security that the higher end firewalls that are command line driven provide.
  • Management interface is simple yet creates a powerful and secure firewall
  • Management of all location firewalls from one pane
  • Free management appliance virtual machine to collect data for deep dives into usage and security
  • Dependable technical support for the platform
Very scalable product line that uses the some network security software at the kernel so easy to implement at small 10 - 20 user companies all the way up to several hundred user count environments. While it can be configured via web browser, I highly recommend installing the WatchGuard Management Console on a PC for management and control.

We use it both internally by way of their NFR program for partners and deploy it at our managed service and break-fix clients. Over the past 6 or 7 years, WatchGuard's network security appliances have become the backbone of our network security across all of our clients. If they haven't already been migrated to one of their appliances, then we are currently in talks to have that migration performed.
  • VLAN
  • ACLs
  • Mobile VPN.
  • BOVPN (persistent site to site vpns).
  • Poor Integrated Wireless on lower end appliances.
  • Require license for all WAP's.
  • Firmware upgrades from WebUI can be finicky.
Watchguards stand out when deployed at SMB clients where the network infrastructure is relatively straightforward and doesn't require a particularly complex implementation. There is excellent support for VLANs, Firewall ACL,s and VPNs, however, extremely complex implementations requiring a large number of rule sets are less user-friendly to implement, and lend themselves more to CLI-based devices.

We have Watchguard appliances at all of our locations. We use them to implement flawless branch-office VPN and mobile user VPN. I do not have to worry about intrusion with the various default security features that come out of the box. I have used competing firewall appliances such as Sonicwall, and find Watchguard to be superior.
  • Branch-office VPN
  • Mobile VPN
  • Web interface
  • Cost of annual renewals
I can drop a watchguard appliance into any network situation and make it work. Very flexible interface that I can navigate with ease.

Watchguard Firebox helps to defend our network from unwanted intrusions on the internet. It allows us to customize that protection to allow the internet services we need and block the ones we do not want or are potentially dangerous. We use their VPN services to secure staff when working remotely and I like the ability to easily block access to any of our or all services from countries that we do not deal with.
  • Robust network defense that you can customize to fit your needs
  • Strong VPN services for remote staff or sites
  • Great technical support when you need assistance
  • Better interface for working with VPN accounts
  • Ability to easily export list of VPN accounts
  • support for split internet with IKE2 VPN connections
Years ago when I first started working with WatchGuard I noticed lots of attacks coming from countries that we had no business dealings with. Having the ability to easily block countries from all access to our network allowed me to eliminate almost all of this.

We use a Firebox T40 in this office. It makes remote working easy through VPN for both Windows and Mac. We recently upgraded from a T30 and the transition was seamless. Users' VPN programs didn't need to be reinstalled or reconfigured. Most people didn't even know we changed anything.
  • VPN
  • block unwanted websites
  • logging
  • Can't think of any from my level of engagement
The Mobile VPN program is easy enough to install and configure for users. Most of them can install it just using my simple memo and without my help. Makes my job easier. Any time I have a problem with the VPN or installing the program, usually the answer is in the Knowledge Base.

We use Watchguard for our primary internet connections in 7 buildings and use IPSec tunnels to keep everything connected.

We have dual internet connections and the functionality the firebox provides is adequate.

Managing the support contracts is the only challenging part, as security changes it would be nice to have better recommendations on what we should be purchasing to have the best value for our money and the best services to keep us protected... this is an area that could use improvement.
  • Multiple Internet connections
  • IPSec tunnels (although they drop if the support license isn't uptodate.. which is very annoying
  • Uptime is very good. They are low maintenance compared to other systems
  • It's not easy enough to see current (last hour) of usage/device, so we can quickly identify which devices either have errors or are consuming large amounts of bandwidth
  • Other systems we've used provide much more impressive reporting, eg. usage/device, top sites, top blocked sites.
Ubiquiti Dream Machines are offering better value for SMB's right now.

Watchguard is the choice Firewall/UTM for the edge of all of our client networks. This is our first line of defense for our client networks as well as handling VPN and ISP failover.
  • Easy to Manage
  • Branch Office and Azure VPN
  • Web Filter
  • HTTPS scanning implementation could be streamlined
Watchguard is well suited for general use, but it's especially great with multi-location businesses. We don't see any scenario where we don't recommend this to any business client.

This WatchGuard Firebox T15 worked well for the small office (8 employees) and 100mbps fiber internet. We were only utilizing 3 of the 9 subscriptions as we didn't have a severe data center to protect. When we moved to the new office and ran 20 people, the network was more congested and about the same speed (even on 400mbps coax internet). The final office with about 80 devices and 5 wireless AP's, the network kept suffocating. WatchGuard did recommend we upgrade the device BEFORE we tried using it as it was not recommended. We didn't have $2800 to upgrade, so we're currently with a different security device.
  • Blocks on attacks
  • Extreme detail on reporting
  • Extreme finetuning available (somewhat complicated)
  • Multiple user interfaces are available, but not sure which one to use
  • Pricing is steep, but you do get what you pay for here
  • Price quotes from two different providers were 50% different for same hardware
For complicated setups and secure requirements, they are REALLY good at what they do. Know that it will be pricey.

Watchguard is the perimeter firewall for multiple office. I use it for Site-to-site VPN networking connecting all offices together. its used for the rare need for remote VPN access to internal resources. It is used to provide some content filtering for example porn, hacking, and other sites that are sensitive in a corporate environment. Its nice to have the ability to block access to websites based on countries helps to eliminate some of the more riskier connections outside the US.
  • Site-to-site VPN
  • content filtering
  • mobile worker VPN
  • Logging
  • combined reporting from multiple devices in one location
  • better information about new features when released
I have found that what I am using it for is perfect. I know there are things in the system that I have not even used yet, it has worked very well for me. I love how easy it was to make changes and update it, adding new rules to block countries websites seems small but worthwhile to me. I recommend it to other small companies in Utah i work with because of how simple the site-to-site vpn worked so seamless.

We use the Watchguard Firebox firewall in our organization. It protects our network from intrusions with TSS, helps us to host our web server and on-prem MS Exchange servers, and also provides services for our users such as VPN access. We use multiple fireboxes at a few different locations and connect them with the Branch Office VPN feature.
  • Intrusion Prevention
  • Mostly user intuitive
  • Regular updates
  • Help with a better solution for working with MS Exchange on-prem so that we can secure the ECP and OWA from the outside without losing functionality for active sync for cell phones and such.
  • Even more affordable smaller boxes for home use.
  • Built-in ways to handle the newer network protocols/features such as QUIC protocols that services like google are using so that we don't have to block all of that type of traffic just to be able to block youtube from loading for users that we don't want using it.
So far we haven't had any issues with using our WatchGuard Firebox and appreciate the reliability as well as the informative quarterly updates that are truly industry specific and aren't just sales pitches. We will likely update to newer boxes in the future when ours are EOL. For now, we are happy with the fireboxes that we have with TSS.

Our organization is comprised of 3 campuses, one fiber connection (1GB), and two Dedicated Ethernet Circuits (MPLS). We implement three Watchguard Fireboxes (M370, M390, T35), one at each campus, with two of the campuses performing MAC filtering. Total number of devices managed is 400-450 on any given day. Watchguard's Basic Security Subscription on each Firebox along with our policies protects our servers, students, and teachers. Reliability has been 100% over the past four years. Not one lock-up. Speed is 650-850mbps at each wired device on our network. Tech support is rarely needed. That is, we may have implementation questions to complete a particular task, but not bug issues when we contact support. Tech support sometimes is instant, and other times, a few hours away. 5 1/2 Years ago we had an appliance fail, a next-day replacement was provided, and a dedicated tech got us back up and running in less than an hour. Is it the least expensive product, no. Is it the most expensive product, no. It is however the best ROI with high performance for the $. We have tried other appliances, Watchguard wins our business.
  • Comprehensive database of known threats preprogrammed into appliance
  • Super fast throughput, even under heavy load
  • Ability to manage policies/interface through Web or GUI
  • Make traffic monitor easier to read
  • Create a map of policies report
Not really affordable for home use - that is to say it is overkill as far as the device models we use. If you want to spend the $$ for your home, it would be well protected.

Again, speaking only for the models we use, 50-500 users are easily and quickly protected, even under heavy load.
