Watchguard is the perimeter firewall for multiple office. I use it for Site-to-site VPN networking connecting all offices together. its used for the rare need for remote VPN access to internal resources. It is used to provide some content filtering for example porn, hacking, and other sites that are sensitive in a corporate environment. Its nice to have the ability to block access to websites based on countries helps to eliminate some of the more riskier connections outside the US.
  • Site-to-site VPN
  • content filtering
  • mobile worker VPN
  • Logging
  • combined reporting from multiple devices in one location
  • better information about new features when released
I have found that what I am using it for is perfect. I know there are things in the system that I have not even used yet, it has worked very well for me. I love how easy it was to make changes and update it, adding new rules to block countries websites seems small but worthwhile to me. I recommend it to other small companies in Utah i work with because of how simple the site-to-site vpn worked so seamless.

We use the Watchguard Firebox firewall in our organization. It protects our network from intrusions with TSS, helps us to host our web server and on-prem MS Exchange servers, and also provides services for our users such as VPN access. We use multiple fireboxes at a few different locations and connect them with the Branch Office VPN feature.
  • Intrusion Prevention
  • Mostly user intuitive
  • Regular updates
  • Help with a better solution for working with MS Exchange on-prem so that we can secure the ECP and OWA from the outside without losing functionality for active sync for cell phones and such.
  • Even more affordable smaller boxes for home use.
  • Built-in ways to handle the newer network protocols/features such as QUIC protocols that services like google are using so that we don't have to block all of that type of traffic just to be able to block youtube from loading for users that we don't want using it.
So far we haven't had any issues with using our WatchGuard Firebox and appreciate the reliability as well as the informative quarterly updates that are truly industry specific and aren't just sales pitches. We will likely update to newer boxes in the future when ours are EOL. For now, we are happy with the fireboxes that we have with TSS.

Our organization is comprised of 3 campuses, one fiber connection (1GB), and two Dedicated Ethernet Circuits (MPLS). We implement three Watchguard Fireboxes (M370, M390, T35), one at each campus, with two of the campuses performing MAC filtering. Total number of devices managed is 400-450 on any given day. Watchguard's Basic Security Subscription on each Firebox along with our policies protects our servers, students, and teachers. Reliability has been 100% over the past four years. Not one lock-up. Speed is 650-850mbps at each wired device on our network. Tech support is rarely needed. That is, we may have implementation questions to complete a particular task, but not bug issues when we contact support. Tech support sometimes is instant, and other times, a few hours away. 5 1/2 Years ago we had an appliance fail, a next-day replacement was provided, and a dedicated tech got us back up and running in less than an hour. Is it the least expensive product, no. Is it the most expensive product, no. It is however the best ROI with high performance for the $. We have tried other appliances, Watchguard wins our business.
  • Comprehensive database of known threats preprogrammed into appliance
  • Super fast throughput, even under heavy load
  • Ability to manage policies/interface through Web or GUI
  • Make traffic monitor easier to read
  • Create a map of policies report
Not really affordable for home use - that is to say it is overkill as far as the device models we use. If you want to spend the $$ for your home, it would be well protected.

Again, speaking only for the models we use, 50-500 users are easily and quickly protected, even under heavy load.

Remote Access: Remote access via WatchGuard has been a standout feature for us. The ease of setting up a VPN, both for site-to-site and remote user access, has been exceptional. The VPN connectivity is stable and fast, which is crucial for our team's productivity. The integration of multi-factor authentication has added an extra layer of security without complicating the user experience.Ease of Use: WatchGuard's interface is both intuitive and comprehensive. Our IT team, which ranges from junior technicians to senior network engineers, has found the dashboard and policy management tools to be straightforward. We run a T-55 at one site and a T-75 at the other. Run a standard suit of modules on each of them. I personally think the UI is really cumbersome and difficult to navigate. Often spend time trying to decipher simple things like firewall rules or routing. From experience, firewall rules also often don't work, we've had instances where a user wasn't able to access a site He/She normally could, this gets verified by IT. When we monitor traffic in the watchguard and test, the issue resolves itself. We had to disable DPI because it made things even worse. Similar issues with VPN rules, in addition to poor connection stability.
  • From experience, doesn't crash or lock up
  • Site-to-Site VPN for the most part works
  • Simplify the UI
  • AAD integration for firewall rules
  • Display firewall rule blocking access to a site
  • Improve modules across the board. Most of them like network mapping, AP management feel more like a chore to work with
Though the hardware seems ok, personally the difficult UI, flaky firewall rules, unstable vpn, and misleading licensing language I couldn't recommend this to anyone. I feel duped into buying into this product and I couldn't suggest anyone buy into it either. I'm stuck renewing a "Support" license each year or my appliances stop working, not even allowing internet through, essentially bricking the devices. Though technically this is just for support...

We tried to take shortcuts previously in our network management and security with your typical store bought devices. The control, security and customization options just weren't there. The WatchGuard suite that we purchased allowed us to rest easy knowing that our office network is safe. The Geo-lockout ability was a huge benefit along with the built in VPN functionality. We have a few on-prem applications that need the occasional remote access and the WatchGuard suite made the implementation a no sweat process.
  • Vlan for different divisions and networks within the office
  • Easy to setup and use VPN options for remote users
  • Ability to block and filter certain network traffic
  • A lot of features to configure that can seem overwhelming in the beginning but are simple once you start diving into it
  • I might be missing where it is shown, but the Firewatch could display dns website names instead of the IP address.
  • I might be missing where it is shown, but it would be great if a device that was connected to our wifi could be blocked more easily. Say the main office wifi password was accidently shared, we should be able to block a MAC address or sort of "nudge" it over to the Guest wifi instead.
  • I might be missing where it is shown, but to set up a few internal routes for on-prem file share servers instead of having to write out the IP. Currently we have to edit the host files.
WatchGuard is definitely not for the faint of heart when it comes to network management and security. There are a lot of great features that protect your network but it requires a lot of focus to find what you are looking for and what you want to configure. Sure there are general devices out there that can get your network setup quick if you are just looking to search the web like an at home device. Where WatchGuard fits in is for those businesses that want to really tie down any loose ends and protect their business. It's overkill for your home (although it will do a great job at it and nowadays home internet access should be taken as serious as business cases) but for business uses, there is an entire ecosystem of products to unify and secure your network.

WatchGuard Network Security is an integral part of our organization's cybersecurity framework. It's primarily used to safeguard our network against various threats such as malware and phishing attacks. The product effectively addresses business problems related to data breaches and unauthorized access, which are critical in maintaining our company's integrity and client trust. Our use case involves deploying WatchGuard's firewall and VPN solutions across multiple offices, providing a robust defense perimeter and secure remote access for our mobile workforce. The intuitive interface and detailed reporting features aid in the timely identification and management of network issues, thus fostering a secure and reliable operational environment.
  • VPNs are extremly flexible and can connect to any other VPN out there
  • Only allows what we set it to allow using a zero trust model
  • very rarely needs to be rebooted
  • Reduce confusion between local and cloud setup
WatchGuard Network Security shines in scenarios requiring robust protection against cyber threats, especially in medium to large-scale organizations. For instance, when we faced a surge in phishing attempts, WatchGuard's threat detection capabilities promptly identified and neutralized these threats, ensuring uninterrupted business operations. Its VPN solutions are also well-suited for enabling secure remote work, a necessity in today's flexible work culture. However, in smaller setups or for simpler network structures, it might come across as over-complex or cost-prohibitive. Additionally, organizations requiring highly specialized or industry-specific security compliance measures may find it less appropriate, as it may not cater to such nuanced requirements without additional configurations or third-party integrations.

We have been using WatchGuard's appliances/network security for several years - they play a vital role within our network. We use our M-Series appliance for our work-from-home staff to enable them to VPN into the network via their IP phones, tablets, workstations, etc., and it has proven to be an invaluable tool for not only work-from-home, but for protecting our ingress and egress traffic from malicious actors.

WatchGuard's Firebox solution is an excellent choice for small to mid-tier enterprises that are looking to protect their networks from threats. Performance is stable, fast, and consistent and you can configure the Firebox from a central web-based console. The firewall policies configuration is easier than other firewalls. It offers an excellent real-time traffic monitoring system, spam blocking, prevents network intrusion, identifies, and blocks malicious content, controls spam and malicious emails and blocks inappropriate web content. It logs all network activity for reporting and diagnostics and keeps current with emerging threats.
  • Blocks as well as identifies malicious content.
  • Controls malicious emails and spam.
  • Blocks inappropriate web content.
  • Prevents network intrusion.
  • My Firebox renewal process was hellacious. Albeit an electronic purchase done days ahead of the end date, I did not receive my renewal data in a timely manner. My Firebox was rendered inoperable for a full work day resorting in having to take if offline completely. WatchGuard had to issue a temporary license until they were able to issue the Firebox's permanent license (days later). This situation could have been totally avoided.
WatchGuard does a great job at identifying and blocking content. I would much rather whitelist content than have to worry about it getting through. It also does a superb job of controlling spam and keeping malicious emails at bay as well as blocking inappropriate web content. WatchGuard does a great job at keeping current with emerging threats so I don't have to constantly stay on top of it.

WatchGuard is my firewall and VPN administrator. It helps me creating my site to site VPN tunnels and SSL VPN users access to the network resources by using a software in their computers. It also helps me with MFA for these users. I am controlling DMZ for about 100 servers and VM and about 500 users in the Headquarter.
  • Multiple gateways for BOVPN
  • Extensive verbose on Network Monitor
  • Knowledgeable technical support
  • Good job detecting abnormal traffic in the firewall
  • Some functions are not present in the web version, and some functions are not present in the software installed in the computer
  • To get a "advance report" you need to install a second server in your network
  • Configuring Firewall rules is not flexible, takes a lot of steps
  • Hard to understand and find advanced configuration such as app protection or protocol based traffic
  • Hard to follow documentation
Recommended scenarios is whenever a company needs a good firewall but Fortinet is not present in the market for any reason. I would not recommend WatchGuard for companies where there is a lot of scalability because managing VPN, firewall stacking and multiple devices across the glove starts becoming complex with WatchGuard solutions. They work well but are not easy to manage or not comprehensible.

WatchGuard offers a relatively easy way to fend off threats and proxy and filter inbound and outbound traffic. Most functions and modules are self-explanatory with plenty of online resources available for reference. The live traffic view also gives you a real-time view of inbound and outbound traffic. The Total Security subscription, while spendy, is one of the most comprehensive security suites out there.
  • Proxying encrypted traffic
  • Packet filtering
  • DNS filtering
  • Endpoint protection
  • A catalog of explanations of common traffic monitor messages
  • An easier way to identify content from FireWatch
WatchGuard appliances and network security are best suited for small and medium businesses that need a unified threat management solution that's easy to manage. Physically, the appliance can manage a few to several subnets and VLANs easily with built-in networking features. Failover is easy to configure, if you have multiple inbound connections. The software does cover almost anything a small business would need to secure the network and traffic.
