It is critical to have a plan. You must make sure that your deployment strategy will work with the end client as to not interrupt their business operations. Pre-programming the devices prior to on-site installation is critical to ensure a smooth implementation. Creating policies and creating a template for the devices also assists in the initial setup.

Setup is relatively simple. For maximum efficiency, we implemented a standard form that customers fill out with all the information we need to configure the firewall. Although we do this, there is always some application or service that needs troubleshooting when implementing for the first time, especially with small businesses.

When I set up my first WatchGuard, it took a while for me to get used to all the features and set them up properly. It wasn't difficult, though. I didn't use an implementation team. I have not used one for any upgrades since. They do have support and I call each time to review my plan and listen to any suggestions or tips from WatchGuard. If you are clueless, you can call and they will help.

You can have a working firewall with 20 mins of opening the box, you can set up more advance policies later on but you can get secure internet access quite quickly. The FireCluster is also simple to set up, a single patch cable and a quick step by step wizard and you are up and running.

Like any project, define all of the known requirements so that the configuration is designed for optimal use of the product and uses the best-practice approach. This also results in a more streamlined solutions with no overlap or conflict of functions and is easier to maintain or troubleshoot. Again, this is where we rely on WatchGuard support staff for guidance.
