Tons of customization, but far too easy to mess up.

When I switched from WordPress, I spent several months working with both Wix and Squarespace. I ultimately decided to go with Squarespace, as I found that although Wix has more customization options, it was more difficult for our clients to use. Clients liked the "do anything" interface but quickly messed up their sites, which was a hassle for everyone.
  • Good, simple on-boarding process.
  • Lots of visual customization options.
  • Many different themes to choose from.
Cons
  • It's too easy to mess up the design of your site...you can literally drag and drop elements anywhere, which looks awful!
  • The interface is messy and overwhelming for inexperienced clients.
  • The branding is inconsistent. Wix looks modern and polished in some areas and old and clunky in others.
Wix is great for businesses who have a tech-savvy designer or for business owners who want max control—they want to "play" at being the designer. It's not a good solution for businesses who don't have an internal or freelance designer. The templates are easy to ruin visually in a very short amount of time, so it's all around not a great option for anyone who needs that "high quality" vibe.

Wix used to be good, but messed it up big time

I have used Wix for several websites so far. The main reason would be to create an internet presence and to increase the professionalism with which our NGO is being perceived
  • Prefabricated websites that can be adjusted by its users
  • Website templates which are visually attractive
Cons
  • In my opinion, with the removal of the ADI web-building tool in favor of editor, user-friendliness has suffered tremendously.
  • In my opinion, the removal of the ADI web-building tool in favor of editor makes that a big portion of a website has to be redesigned, as items are now linked to each other in a different way than before.
  • In my opinion, the removal of the ADI web-building tool in favor of editor makes Wix only usable for professional website builders and no longer for the general public.
The fact of Wix moving away from their ADI web-building tool in favour of Editor, in my opinion, makes a huge mess of everything. I feel a lot of the ease and automation of designing my website has gone to such an extent that I now "recommend" Wix only for professional developers. Worse is that I have to redesign a big part of my website as items are now linked to each other in a different way than used to be the case. In my opinion, A big ZERO for Wix, who clearly should do their homework again.

Good value, but slow and has room for improvement

I used Wix to build my very first website. I was new to the space so I began my research online and was overwhelmed by the options. Most sites I found listing the top options showed anywhere from three to ten choices. I kept seeing Wix, Weebly, and Squarespace over and over so I decided to compare among the three. After a trial of each, I decided on Wix.
  • The interface is user-friendly for someone who does not design websites for a living.
  • There are a lot of built-in tools and pieces you can use to construct your website.
  • It is easy to log in and make changes to your website any time you want.
Cons
  • The performance is a major issue. The website runs really slow when editing your website.
  • The database of images to choose from is considerably low.
  • To my surprise, it was more difficult to use on a Mac than a PC even though I used the same browser, Chrome, for both.
I have not used it for eCommerce so I do not know how well it works for this. I used their built in scheduling tool but did not like the look or customization options for it. However, it was easy to sign up elsewhere and just embed the HTML on to my Wix page. It seems easy to embed HTML elements from other sites.

Complete customization from start to finish

We have transferred over several of our business needs into Wix such as payment processing, email management, domain name hosting, and website building. Previously, we were using GoDaddy for our domain name, email management, and website hosting. Wix has helped us become more self-sufficient with more control over what we are publishing.
  • Love the drag and drop system! It is completely customizable and helps you decide what you want so you do not have to have all the answers. Truly is a great option for nonprofits and businesses alike.
  • Easy SEO management and clear reporting options. This helps us to have all of our website and external marketing on one platform WHILE understanding how it is working. We are able to make adjustments based on what visitors are responding to.
  • Love all the widget options. Wix has several applications and add-ons to meet any needs you might have. We utilize this such as video publishing, blog, and several customizable button options.
Cons
  • Since the website builder utilizes a drag and drop system, it can take a bit longer to load your page. It's a good idea to adjust the size of any photos or media that is inserted to help alleviate this problem.
  • We signed up during a promotional period. Our contract has not expired yet but I am nervous that the prices take quite a jump after the initial contract period.
  • There is great customer service but not a lot of help available online. I would like to see better help manuals.
Wix is great for experienced website people and completely new people. That is why we chose this option. For us, we do not have any experience with coding so to be able to edit the entire site yourself was a breath of fresh air! It has been great to completely customize our branding and maintain control.

Wix makes great websites, but editing is really slow after a few pages!

I own a small business that is currently a one-man operation. I travel to my clients' homes and sit with them to help them better learn technology (most commonly computers, tablets, smartphones, etc.). In starting this business, I knew I needed an online presence and I wanted to make my own website instead of hiring someone to do it for me. I researched online and compared (and used a trial) some of the major competitors. I decided on Wix for its features and price. Wix has allowed me to build my own online presence for my brand.
  • Wix includes a lot of templates which helps to kick start building your site instead of starting from scratch.
  • Wix actually has a lot of helpful tools to consider SEO while building your site to help get you found by search engines.
  • Wix has its own app store with a decent selection of free add-ons as well as paid add-ons.
Cons
  • Wix seems to require a lot of resources as the site gets more content. My site is fairly basic. A few pages, a handful of graphics, and some text. But editing the site is much slower than I would like. I have fast internet and have used multiple browsers and computers, but it's still considerably slow.
  • Support can be difficult to reach. I had an issue when I very first signed up and all I could do was submit a question on a forum (no phone #, no email, etc.). Then the response I got was an answer through the forum. This was inconvenient in my opinion.
  • They could improve rearranging strips. Sometimes it seems to cooperate and move all elements in the strip with it. Other times the background moves but leaves all the elements in place.
In my experience, I feel Wix is a great tool for a small business owner with a fairly simple website. The issues I have experienced with speed make me concerned that any kind of eCommerce site with a lot of products or any website with tens to hundreds of pages might be a rough experience to make changes to. I trust the site would work fine on the front-end but would be a painful experience for the person who has to log in and make changes to the site due to slow speed.
