Workplace makes it easy to communicate, but there are some problems

Our company uses Workplace on a daily basis. We use it for communication, both through text and audio calls, between team members. We also use many different groups within Workplace, like an Announcements group where we post important information, or Current Projects to share what we've been working on with the team, and even a Social group to post things from our everyday lives.
  • Team communication.
  • Announcements.
  • Social.
Cons
  • It could have a cleaner desktop interface.
  • I've had a lot of audio problems with calls.
  • Sometimes takes a while to refresh if my computer falls asleep.
Workplace is great for keeping up with team members and easily chatting with them throughout the day. Our company focuses a lot on interrelated projects, so there are often many different people working on one project at the same time. Workplace makes it easy to discuss these projects with our team members without having to go through email.

An intuitive tool that is easy to roll out and solves a lot of communication challenges.

Workplace is currently being used by almost our entire organization, with a few holdouts that haven't seen the value. We were looking for a more efficient way to communicate and collaborate than email, but other simpler chat clients were not being adopted consistently. Workplace offered an office communication tool with almost no learning curve for most users. For teams that have adopted it successfully, it has both reduced the number of email conversations required and offered a more seamless interaction opportunity for remote users.
  • Minimal learning curve - besides being generally intuitive, the functions and interface are familiar to anyone who uses Facebook.
  • Balanced notifications - many competing tools have notifications that are either too intrusive and frequent or not helpful enough, while Workplace is a good middle ground.
  • Flexible - polls and comments have a variety of business uses that make it a much more robust communication tool compared to strictly chat-based options.
Cons
  • Limited project management options - no good way to track tasks or projects, so other tools are needed.
  • Easy to dismiss for people who don't see the value - the Facebook-like nature of the tool can be a liability when it comes to wanting management to take it seriously.
  • Chat interface has downsides - the standalone chat applications can be a bit buggy, and the chat interface within the web view is not ideal.
  • No intuitive way to message a group - chat options like Slack are better at easily messaging a group or department, where in Workplace you have to be a member of a group to start a conversation.
Workplace is an excellent and intuitive way to have efficient conversations with groups or individuals. It excels when you need to post an item for review and have a real-time conversation with a team. It also takes advantage of the Facebook-style interface to give remote employees a way to interact and engage with the team that offsets the need for face-to-face conversations. It does not replace task and project management tools though.

Workplace by Facebook is used within the department of my research program. It addresses collaboration when we are not on location, or even if we are and need to share documents or data.
  • File sharing.
  • Video streaming for business.
  • Storage space.
Cons
  • It provides individual video calling, not group calling.
  • Does not link to personal Facebooks.
  • Some issues with project collaboration.
It is a great tool for a cheap way to manage a business, but there are limitations to that. Some quirks like the video calling in groups are not quite where they should be yet.

It's just so much easier with Workplace

Workplace from Meta is being used in the entire Africa Zone at AB InBev - supporting around 13000 employees. We use this platform to address the issues of employee communication and increase employee engagement across the business. On this platform we run various campaigns to push employee engagement further and tackle issues brought up in surveys run each year by the company.
  • Connect employees who are far apart.
  • Allow users to share informal content in a way that is familiar and comfortable
  • Innovate with live video and questions and answers
  • Track engagement on the platform and what interests the users
Cons
  • Analytics can always be worked on
  • Layout can be a little intimidating for a new user who isn't used to platforms of this nature
  • requires a healthy amount of admin and behind the scenes work
Workplace from Meta has been an incredible resource over the shift of hybrid working during the pandemic. Because of the platform, we were able to still connect all our employees together when they could not physically connect in the real world. The platform is a one stop shop for employee communication, meetings, live video and content sharing.

We use it to inform staff of daily events and new projects. We also put out PDFs, photos, and forms for easy access for staff. HR and building events keep staff updated as much as possible of all the work that is being done with departments and building renovations, etc. All staff have access to Workplace. So far it's been a very helpful tool. I do wish it had some type of form building section.
  • Passing information to all staff
  • It's free
  • Chat feature
  • You can view it on your mobile device
Cons
  • Maybe finding a way to create forms other than surveys.
  • Great place for the HR department to post policies, forms, hiring.
  • Good way for departments to work together on simple events.
  • Good way to post daily events and get feedback from staff ongoing projects.
  • It should be only for work-related items. No personal information should be posted.
