We use Zuora for billing (invoicing), creation and tracking of subscriptions, cancellations and sync of data over to our CRM (Salesforce) as well as to Netsuite for our financials.
  • Invoice creation
  • Amendment tracking
  • Reporting
  • Product catalog management (e.g. bundling)
  • Permission/role management
If you have a very straightforward use case, simple product catalog and don't require integration with other systems, complex reporting or comprehensive tech support or knowledgebase, Zuora might be a good option.
For companies with a complex use case, integrations, detailed reporting needs or who need solid tech support, I don't recommend Zuora at all.
  • Poor support has slowed down our implementation of features and resolution of issues
  • Lack of flexibility has led to some complex and unwieldy workaround solutions
  • No useful built in AR reporting so we had to come up with our own solution
  • Challenges with finance due to unreliability of Salesforce sync

In my opinion, they have terrible support experience, tickets often wait many days or even weeks without a response. No responses to requests for escalation of tickets. CSM never proactively engages with us and often also doesn't respond to emails even when we are looking to expand our usage of the application.
In my experience, slow response times, poor technical support, technical documentation is lacking which means we have to engage support way more than we would like to. Tickets often drag on for several weeks with no update.

We are using Zuora for our monthly invoicing as well as revenue reporting. We leverage the Zuora for Salesforce functionality so that our sales people build Zuora quotes within Salesforce which sync to Zuora automatically once a customer becomes billable.

Zuora allows us to automate our billing process as well as provides flexibility to adjust our products and prices, which was much more limited using out of the box Salesforce opportunity products previously.
  • The sync with Salesforce. The ability for Zuora and Salesforce to sync eliminates manual transfer of data and areas of human error.
  • Flexibility of setup. With all the various types of products and different revenue recognition rules, Zuora allows us to set up the rules we need to fit our business model.
  • Ease of use. Creating and posting bill runs is simple and straight forward. With a few clicks of a button you are able to create and post invoices for all customers.
  • The service team. I have had a great experience working alongside the Zuora consultant team. They have been easy to work with and have the ability to suggest effective solutions to ensure Zuora meets our business requirements.
  • The new reporting module is definitely a step in the right direction, but the reporting module could still be better. Mirroring the drag and drop functionality of Salesforce would be great with the ability to create custom dashboards from the data. The 'run detail' vs 'run summary' reporting is a bit confusing. The 'Hide details' functionality in Salesforce would be better. Also, the fact that you can not provide a link directly to a Zuora report is pretty frustrating.
  • Ability to bulk import quotes from the SF side that integrates with Zuora. During our Zuora setup we were very surprised that the ability to bulk create Zuora quotes that sync to Zuora was not possible. This caused a real headache for our setup and it would be great if Zuora allowed for this.
Zuora is made for SaaS. I believe for companies using Salesforce it is highly suitable as it allows integration between sales and finance, which is at other times a black hole. We are still moving forward to use another tool for our general ledger system.
We moved from Xero to Zuora for our invoicing. We now use Zuora for invoice management and automated billing. We would like to long term do more research to automate the payment piece, which now still occurs outside of Zuora while leveraging the payment run functionality to mark invoices as paid. We use Zuora as our current reporting tool for revenue recognition and accounting close period. However, we will be implementing a robust general ledger in the next 6 months as we scale.
No
We are under the standard support plan and find the email based support very responsive and able to meet our needs.
I have been very impressed with the support received from Zuora. No only are the response times quick, they are also well-informed and thoughtful. There are times when multiple use cases need to be provided in order to pinpoint to answer I am looking for, but overall I am able to depend on useful assistance via the email support channel.
I have had very positive interactions with Zuora consultants, specifically those we have engaged in professional services around implementation and migration assistance. Where their service has truly stood out, however, is in those times they have gone above and beyond, being generous with their time to ensure we had what we needed to move forward.

Zuora is currently being implemented via API calls to replace our current internally-build billing system. We're a company that requires subscription management for year-long terms. The way we currently have our billing software set up in our internal admin system is not sufficient to handle the large user-base or the amount of revenue flowing through our system. We're implementing this third-party subscription management system in order to improve reporting and conversion rates, and to improve our future a la carte add-on items.
  • Manages subscription services specifically.
  • Can be altered to fit your particular business needs.
  • Their User Interface and User Experience is absolutely garbage.
  • They could benefit from more extensive user research and feedback. I feel like they've never had any communication with their users about the ease of using their products.
  • Make simpler ways to complete tasks. This could be done if they hired a UI/UX Designer. I am convinced they've never thought of hiring one.
Subscription Management for Subscription Based Service companies. If they improved their user experience and product usability, they'd be in a much better position for me to recommend their product to other companies. [Zuora is less appropriate for] Really any company that needs an easily understood/simple implementation product to manage subscription based services. If you are not technically savvy, or if you don't have 25 hours per week to keep up maintenance in Zuora, then it's not the product for you. I would personally not recommend this product to anyone or any company.
We've been with Zuora since before I joined the billing implementation team. This is the only third-party system I've worked with and was the only true alternative for us to use in replacing our internally built system. I wish I would have been around during the final decision on Zuora in order that I could have had more input in choosing an alternative company/solution.
No
Zuora is already expensive, and their normal customer support is slow and uneducated, so we had no feeling of added value paying for additional Zuora services to help us resolve issues that are only issues due to the poor usability and experience of managing Zuora.
A support request is emailed to their support team, then an automated response is sent to you in a couple hours saying "Hey, someone will take a look at your support request soon". Then somewhere around 12-18 hours later, an actual support member responds with "Have you checked out our tutorials? Here's one that sounds like it might help you". I don't want a tutorial given to me that I've already read through that only exists because of the terrible user design of Zuora's user interface.
Yes
Not timely, refer to my last response regarding the "initial" and "actual" support request response. The requests I've made have only had actual responses made to me in 12 hours or more.
I did have one situation where I had a positive experience after emailing our designated support/integration rep about the terrible user interface design and how difficult it was to use. After explaining my frustrations, this individual offered to have himself and his lead developer personally meet with me so that we could talk about my frustrations and help them get a better idea on how to improve their product. This meeting never did get scheduled, but the fact that he mentioned it and at least had the idea of meeting with me was a positive interaction.
  • Absolutely Nothing
  • Not one thing
  • Literally not one single process
  • Making Account Subscription Changes
  • Managing Customer Account, invoice, and subscription dates
  • Deleting things. How is it so hard to delete things? Just have a trashcan icon and let me delete it!
No
Well aside from it being absolutely terrible to look at, navigate, interact with, complete processes, delete things, change things, do minimal-effort tasks... no one can properly pronounce Zuora.

Zuora is being used accross the organization for virtually all of our subscription management and billing needs. As a SAAS based company it's primay purpose is to manage the subscription lifecycle of our customers.
  • It keeps a record of material changes to subscriptions in versions. These can be reported and and researched as needed.
  • It is cloud based which minimizes administrative overheard of the system
  • The billing rules are flexible
  • Zuora rates subscriptions based on time, not usage. If you sell value to your customers in usage (not time) this could be an issue when customer upgrade mid-term.
  • Usage is marked as processed through the date of the last run invoice against that subscription and charge, even if zuora didn't rate a charge (invoice) against it.
  • Being cloud based it means that any data modifications of any size have to be done against cloud based API's, orders of magnitude slower than equivalent on prem/sql based solutions.
Zuora is most appropriate when you are your services based on time, not consumption of usage. It also is very light when it comes to maintenance of the product catalog. It does not have built-in product selection rules, dependencies, requirements, "similar" product suggestions etc. All of that logic, if needed would have to be built on top of Zuora.
Zuora's API is flexible, but will require professional services or in house development staff to become familiar to leverage anything that isnt available "out of the box".
  • Implemented in-house
No
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled
  • As with any migration garbage in/garbage out. Data quality was an issue from legacy systems. Only Zuora can actually "import" data which increased turnaround time and overall implementation hassle.
  • A more in depth understanding of how zuora rates products and services along with a more in depth analysis of our complex business needs would have been helpful. We didn't know what we didn't know at the beginning.
Implementation ended up taking far longer that expected and in some ways we are still cleaning up data and learning about aspects of the system that inform how rate plans are modeled.
Yes
Questions are answered quickly and first level support is responsive.
Yes
During implementation we reported several behaviors that were inconsistent accross the api. These were eventually addressed or worked around.
  • Billing runs
  • Account management
  • Reporting
  • Product catalog, no filtering, large numbers of rate plans take a long time to render, edit rate plans is time consuming
  • User management is painful, no filtering, sorting doesn't persist, no ability to "delete" a user so all your users are visible forever
The UI needs a refresh, most incidences of lists of data don't provide adequate filtering or persistance of UI settings
