Overall Satisfaction with VMware Horizon (formerly VMware View)

We are currently using this in combination with a Single Sign-On solution to present our EMR to our users, and we are also using it to provide a work from home solution for several of our users, which allows the company to save money by allowing them to re-purpose the area where the departments that were sent home to work used to sit.
  • Manages the graphics and audio use well.
  • The initial setup is fairly easy and can be done in a day or two for a simple setup.
  • Very similar uses to VMware ESXi, and you can use vcenter to manager the devices.
  • Licensing. This goes hand in hand with cost.
  • Cost -- every feature tends to cost you, it would seem.
  • Support can sometimes be hit or miss.
  • It has had a positive impact on our remote offices by decreasing the cost of equipment we are having to use to put in our remote offices.
  • We have seen a slow increase in our ROI, from hardware cost, setup time, implementation cost, and speed.
  • We plan to increase our VDI footprint with a goal of eventually replacing all of our devices and trying to use only thin clients.
Citrix vid setup was very difficult and initially hard to set up. I believe this has changed somewhat now, but there are still multiple servers that need to be set up before it can be used. Vmware VDI was fairly easy to set up and was immediately working and up and running, once an image was created and published out. They both have pros and cons. Hype v is cheap and doesn't require all the fancy licensing like the others, but it does require some licensing. For a simple test, it was the easiest to deploy, and we had a VM running off of a single server in less than a day.
Support is kind of hit or miss from my experience. Sometimes you get a great support person and sometimes you do not. It really depends. We have on several occasions had to get our team to get someone to actually help and resolve our issue. But when you do get a good support person usually they can fix the problem fairly quickly unless it is a bug, and even then it seems that they can fix the issues fairly quickly.

Citrix ADC (formerly NetScaler ADC), Citrix Hypervisor (formerly XenServer), Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp), Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop), Trend Micro Apex One (formerly OfficeScan), Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security, Trend Micro InterScan Web Security Virtual Appliance, Hyper-V, Veritas NetBackup Appliance, Veritas NetBackup, Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)
In our situation, it has worked well for presenting a desktop that users can badge in and out of and launch our EMR, or use the Outlook web app, etc.
On the other hand, we have also used it as complete replacements for peoples' desktops. Several high-level users have made the switch, and they find it to be very convenient and easy to use.
