Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Veritas Backup Exec is used as our central backup platform for one business location consisting of about 250 end users with 20+ servers

Pros and Cons

Version updates are fairly frequent and provide new features often.
Easy to use interface.

Speed of access to backup sets is pretty slow, could use a boost.

Return on Investment

Positive Impact: As mentioned, there are many different agents available. Veritas Backup Exec keeps the price point down to a reasonable level, as you only need to purchase agents for the programs you use.
Positive Impact: Patches and version updates are frequent. This helps the bottom line by adding features without forcing a purchase of new versions.

We did look at several backup solutions when we implemented VMWare. I might be a little prejudiced because I've used the product so long, but there are many competitors in this market, and the cost was much higher to obtain the same functionality as we get with Veritas Backup Exec.

Support Rating

In the few instances of having to contact support, our overall outcome was always good. They would have received a better score if the wait time was less, but I attribute this to the timing of support calls - it was during the previous owner's time. We have not had to open a support ticket since Veritas Backup Exec took the product back over.

As a standard, Back-up, Veritas Backup Exec has been around for quite a while. Even though it's not usually considered as an enterprise-level backup/recovery platform, I've been using it for several years through many changes, and it has always met my requirements. They offer several different agents for various programs, databases, VMware, etc. You only buy what you need.
