Overall Satisfaction with Trello

The department I work for uses Trello. Specifically, we use it to track the work we do during our monthly maintenance windows where we follow a series of tasks that must be done in a specific order. We rely on it to track the changes we make as well as any issues or notes for future maintenance windows. It is a great way to have everything organized in one place and it's nice to be able to look back at previous boards to view any information that could help with any issues encountered in the current month.
  • Ability to add links, notes, and attachments to each card
  • Easy to use and get complicated tasks organized
  • Each task is easily separated into cards and each card can drill down into a checklist of subtasks to complete the main task.
  • No way to account for task dependencies
  • Some basic features are only available through power ups
  • Cannot be exported to other tools like MS Project
  • Very easy to use and get projects set up
  • You can quickly track progress of a project and what tasks are still needing to be done, which are in progress, completed or skipped.
  • Cloud based app
  • Power ups are available to add different features
  • Promotes project collaboration within a team
  • Makes the team more efficient when tracking progress in a project
  • Makes access to all the information in a project easy to get to instead of digging through documents, emails and notes. All the details of a project are kept in one board.
I prefer Trello because of its visual approach to project management. The boards are easy to customize and each card on a board represents a task. Within each card, you can set up checklists and add notes or specific team members. Teams can work on a project in real-time and everyone is able to see the tasks assignments and track activities. Also for getting started, Trello's free version is easy to set up and start using. Trello also has a great knowledge base and there are webinars available in addition to the community forum to get help from fellow users. Jira is more targeted towards users who want to see charts and reports and track performance. It is better for larger projects used across different teams.

For small projects in a team setting, it is an excellent tool to use and I would highly recommend starting with the free version and testing it out. It is a great way to get tasks organized easily and view the full picture. In my team of five, we rely heavily on it when we have recurring projects because it is easy to grab a board and update it based on a previous one. It is also very convenient to go back to a previous board for additional information. For a larger project, it may get more complicated because you cannot see task dependencies or track times.
