Overall Satisfaction with Nutanix AOS

We've been using Nutanix AOS to consolidate our converged infrastructure (CI) to hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) across our entire estate. This has meant quicker deployment, less rack space, and simpler management overall. We stuck with using ESXi as our hypervisor as it gives us the most flexibility with the existing tools we need for operational support. Hoping to add Nutanix Files later on to consolidate the many file servers and shares across the business, additional capacity for this can easily be added via the Nutanix Storage nodes.
  • Scales easily through addition of extra nodes to the cluster
  • Easy to upgrade
  • AHV included to help keep some of the costs down
  • Integration with 3rd party tools
  • Prism is limited if you use ESXi as your hypervisor
  • Tied to certain hardware vendors
  • Simple to manage and maintain
  • Free online training material good (Nutanix University)
  • Some cost savings on hardware vs HCI, but licensing can tilt it the other way
We've decided to go for both VxRail and Nutanix AOS to make sure we can get the best deals from both sides. I appreciate this may not be a path most companies can go down, but always good to have a bit of healthy competition between vendors to ensure you're getting the best pricing from both sides!

Do you think Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure's feature set?

Yes

Did Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure again?

Yes

Nutanix AOS is well suited to:
Redundancy and resilience of your hardware
Largely manage itself, lots of checks done via Nutanix Cluster Check (NCC)
24/7 Operations where you have contractual commitments to keep
Support is second to none
Free online educational material (which is up-to-date too!)

On the downside, Nutanix AOS is probably not a good solution if:
Cost is your primary concern, maybe stick with vSphere or HyperV
24x7 uptime is not critical
There may be times when you need to work at a command line for features not in the GUI yet or general support requirements

Evaluating Nutanix AOS and Competitors

  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
  • Product Reputation
Mainly the HCI and reliability aspects of the platform.

Nutanix AOS Support

Probably some of the best support I've come across, certainly always gone above and beyond my expectations, thoroughly recommended!

Nutanix AOS Reliability

The performance is pretty good. Just make sure you know your workloads ahead of time and plan for some growth. You don't want to be in a position where you bought HDDs, and you really need to buy SSDs for your applications to run without issue, especially true for any database or VDI environment!
