Overall Satisfaction with QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise

I use QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise for two businesses. The first uses it exclusively for client management, book-keeping, and to sync up with TurboTax. It does what we need it to do for this in-person, geographically-centered business.

For the other business, we use QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise only to create invoices for clients who prefer to pay by check rather than using online payments. This is because we do not prefer the QuickBooks interface for online payments since most clients who want to do online payments do not want to use the QuickBooks option. It is good for what we need it to do to for creating invoices in this business.

The key problems that it addresses are how to create professional, branded invoices for clients that aren't co-branded with the processor's details (like PayPal). It allows both businesses to do this and track payments for clients we issue invoices to.

For the in-person business, we sync our bank accounts with the software to allow for up-to-date information transfer. This is helpful to be sure that everything is tracked as it should be.
  • Creating simple, professional, branded invoices.
  • Saving secure files.
  • Syncing with bank accounts.
  • Exporting invoices to end to clients.
  • Online payments! Most of my clients who want to do online payments do not want to use their online payment system, and QuickBooks Desktop does not have an intuitive option to allow for the processing fees that go along with using other vendors for this. It is a BIG downside for my business that's mostly online where most clients do not want to use QuickBooks for payment.
  • A simpler way to sync account information from my small banking institution. The files come over but they're cumbersome to translate to QuickBooks Desktop. I tried QuickBooks Online and that's worse.
  • There are too many accounting-centered options for my businesses. Both are small but need more options than what is offered in QuickBooks Online, yet the additional features of QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise is just too much for our needs. We need a middle of the road option that is efficient for small businesses.
  • Positive - this has been the backbone of my businesses for seven years. Without it, we wouldn't have been able to look as professional nor invoice as efficiently as we needed to while growing our small businesses.
  • Negative - it still seems to be missing the option to account for transactions fees in a simple way for online payment processing that's outside of QuickBooks. I'm sure there's a way to do it but it is cumbersome for a small business that needs to have a nimble payment and tracking system.
  • Positive -that it seamlessly works with TurboTax. We prefer this for our tax prep and it is nice that it can work so well with it. This has streamlined our processes enormously, taking a multi-hour process down to less than an hour.
  • Positive - great dashboard with customizable view options so I can see what's going on (invoices outstanding or paid, year over year, etc.) at a glance.
Both of my businesses have experienced growth over the last seven years although I doubt that QuickBooks has directly impacted that. As far as supporting our growth, it works as well now as it did when we started seven years ago. There are not any features that we're utilizing now that we weren't when we first started, so although this works it hasn't been a major player in supporting our business growth.
It was quite simple to install and get started with using. It took me a while to get used to how to create an invoice or how to account and then how to input items that we'd purchased online which went into repairs AND that same item needed to be included on an invoice for clients. Although that process took some time, I've tried other systems and the learning curve is similar. I don't believe QuickBooks Desktop is better as far as simplicity of how the system is constructed/how easy it is to learn. It seems on par with others in the field.
I didn't not expect to be able to include a tax on some items (those that we buy then resell) and not others, like our services. Where we're based, we don't charge tax on services but we do on items resold. I did not expect that it would sync with TurboTax, since they're both owned by Intuit, and that is a plus for both of my businesses.
I selected QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise because it has the robust book-keeping options plus the inventory and resale options that my businesses need. It creates a streamlined invoice that I can design within the system, and save as a PDF without their branding and without the need to force my client to pay online. Dubsado had too many features that didn't fit for most of my clients, so I'd have to keep skipping options to make my work fit their system (a big downer). PayPal has the feature to create invoices but the reselling piece isn't what we needed it to be. In order to get most of what we needed for my two businesses, we went with QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. It is a solid option and it fits most of our needs.

Yes

Did QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise again?

Yes

QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise allows for most of the features that small businesses need, so I would recommend this to many small businesses owners who have some experience running a business. If they're just starting out and haven't run a business/department/or done budgeting at the corporate level, then I would not recommend this option. It will be too overwhelming. 9/10 for having what is needed. I only deducted one star for the clunky-ness that can be cumbersome since it seems that this is the best option when compared with others in the market that only cover book-keeping and accounting options. There is software that includes billing/invoicing/account keeping with other features like contracts/scheduling/email marketing but that can be too much for many small businesses OR it can be more systems than are needed. QuickBooks does what it needs to do for businesses without having to set up your entire business within one system.
