Overall Satisfaction with Amazon CloudWatch

CloudWatch is part of our monitoring solution. It is Amazon's built-in logs and metrics solution. It is used by our information technology team to monitor the state of our AWS infrastructure. Metrics from it are used to inform other teams, but the tool itself is too obtuse to expose to most employees.
  • Recording metrics.
  • Integrating with AWS infrastructure.
  • Handling large log volumes.
  • Logs are hard to follow.
  • Custom metrics.
  • Easier to create dashboards.
  • Alerted us of a backup in processing.
  • Difficulty in setting up alerts limited utility.
  • Useful for integrations with other monitoring tools.
Amazon CloudWatch is a monitoring tool, much like Datadog and New Relic. It comes integrated with AWS services, and it's really the only way to get metrics related to AWS infrastructure. That said, it integrates well with external monitoring tools, and both Datadog and New Relic collect its metrics. It is my recommendation you look at integrating this tool with an additional monitoring solution.
The tooling and the documentation are complicated and difficult to set up. That said, the metrics from AWS are already set up, and the tool already collects the data desired. The support is probably helpful, but there's only so much they can do to truly help when the problem is the size and complexity of the tool itself.
The tool collects a great deal of data, and data that's not available many other places. But the data is hidden in obscure places, and the logs are hard to read and follow. The user interface could use a heavy rework, and several companies have made a business out of scraping the data and presenting it better.

Datadog, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS)
AWS CloudWatch is an almost necessary component of any monitoring solution for AWS, as many metrics are unavailable otherwise. It is well suited for monitoring and alerting on the state of the AWS infrastructure itself, but it is not well suited for application monitoring and alerting. Thankfully, it integrates well with other monitoring tools, and that is how I'd recommend using it.
