Overall Satisfaction with Amazon EMR (Elastic MapReduce)

AWS EMR is typically used by us when data is huge, it does a pretty good job with data science techniques. Has helped us build the predictive models and carry out some data mining process which otherwise would take longer time in the local machines. With AWS Elastic MapReduce, the computation speed is certainly a plus point. We've also used it for data processing on S3 with the help of Hadoop framework. The application of AWS EMR in our organization is more for data processing purpose and is less used for data science.
  • The main advantage of AWS Elastic MapReduce is it's certainly cost efficient.
  • It provides the better security service (like EC2 keypairs) for the clusters.
  • Scalability is a plus point.
  • It could have been more matured with machine learning capabilities.
  • The support material available online on Elastic MapReduce is limited and we might end up spending more time in understanding/researching the tool.
  • Positive impact is that we're able to process our data much, much faster.
  • Can't think of any negatives!
One of the very simple reasons to choose Amazon Elastic MapReduce is because it is popular, known for its computational capabilities and customer service/support and it is also cheaper compared to the other services available out there.
The customer support so far has been great since from the time we started using AWS Elastic MapReduce. Haven't had any issues yet.
The usability is pretty decent, might take some time for the new users to get used to the tool. Although good, UI could have been much better!

Would you buy Amazon EMR (Elastic MapReduce) again?

Amazon MapReduce is hands down one of the best tools for processing the data into S3 buckets considering the solid framework that goes behind it. Unless very necessary or only if the data is very big, it is good to use Elastic MapReduce for analytics & predictive modeling, otherwise it could be expensive for organizations. Initially, it took us some time to get used to the UI.
