Overall Satisfaction with Avalara

It is currently being used only by our accounting department. We will be adding the functionality to allow Customer Service to view exemption status in CertCapture soon. We use it to collect sales tax, exemptions, and file tax returns for the 18 (soon to be 24) states we are registered in.
  • The return filing is very easy.
  • The interface is very user-friendly. I do not have to spend a whole lot of time training.
  • Support is very helpful, fast, and always solves my issues quickly.
  • I currently am unable to report on tax adjustments done in AvaTax Update. This makes reconciliation problematic.
  • I am unable to configure a customer to be sometimes taxable. For example, if they buy some things for resale and some things for their own use. If there was some sort of flag I could send from our ERP on the invoice level rather than the customer level, it would be great.
  • I wish I could easily see what portion (in total for all states) of our tax liability is carried over from or carried over to the next period, again for reconciliation.
  • I spend less time per month filing returns in 18 states than I did just one year ago filing in one state.
  • We are far more likely to be compliant now with Avalara. I really have no idea whether we were out of compliance when everything was manual.
From the user's standpoint, Avalara is very easy to use. All of the screens are user-friendly, and the training material (videos) is really helpful. My staff was trained up super quickly.
  • We definitely have. Our certificates are now visible to anyone who has access, whereas before they were in a 3 ring binder and difficult to manage. Tax returns are much quicker. Reconciliation is a lot more difficult, but that is a function of having eighteen states instead of one, more so than the returns.
None... there were no other options that integrated well with our ERP. That said, I am very happy with Avalara and I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a tax solution.
Avalara is well suited to anyone who needs to track a lot of transactions and uses an ERP. I'm sure it is also good for those who upload transactions, but I do not have experience with that.

Avalara Implementation

We did not have any issues on the Avalara side. The integration piece (not by Avalara) had some issues, but they were all eventually solved.

Integrating Avalara

  • API (e.g. SOAP or REST)
  • Syspro
  • Our own proprietary website using the API
The website integration was not difficult. Syspro is heavily integrated, and the connector had some bugs, but I was able to work with them to get most things fixed.
