Overall Satisfaction with Barracuda Web Security and Filtering

We use a Barracuda Web Filter at multiple locations here in the US. It is used to help prevent users from accessing malicious sites. It is also used to lock down different user groups from accessing certain websites and applications. This is done through the filter and Active Directory users and groups.
  • Provides an easy to use weblog that is searchable by a number of different criteria.
  • Blocks malicious sites and helps prevent malicious downloads.
  • Gives you multiple ways to set up policies. You can use content filtering, block certain applications, certain domains, and web applications.
  • Easy to export policy and import to another filter at a different location.
  • There are 2 different policies; authenticated and unauthenticated. Sometimes the filter does not pick up the user that is logged in. When this happens, that user could potentially access sites that would normally be blocked.
  • Sometimes blocking one thing could block something you need. We had an instance where we use remote software. We block BitTorrent but for some reason, the filter was seeing this remote software as BitTorrent traffic. I got support on the line and we were eventually able to figure out a solution.
  • We put in certain applications. One of them is supposed to be blocked but a lot of the time it doesn't get blocked.
  • It has helped block many spyware webpages.
  • It has helped block malicious downloads.
  • It has helped keep users from spending time on websites not related to work.
There are a lot of settings you can adjust. The web log is easy to use. If a user is having issues accessing a website, you can go in and see what's being blocked and why. After that, you can make adjustments fairly easy. The GUI is easy to navigate and updating the software is a simple click of a button.
I have had to call support a number of times. Each time they were pretty fast at getting back to me. Once I had them on the phone I was able to give them access to the device so they could see what was going on in the back end. We have been able to work to resolve issues in a timely manner.
This is a different type of filtering than the Symantec. The Barracuda web filter does just that, filters web traffic. The Symantec filters the emails that come into the company so I do not really have something else to compare it to. Overall, I would say that this is a good solution and has done the job well.
I think it is well suited for all companies. The only difference would be on the size and model of the device you would want to go with. I have not had too many problems with this device and the support has been very helpful. It is also usually pretty quick.
