Overall Satisfaction with BigCommerce

We use BigCommerce as our website and eCommerce store. We only sell direct to the end user, so it is a critical element of our business. It provides our customers with everything they need to know about our products and purchase them.
  • Provides all basic eCommerce functions, but has plenty of scope for specialist extension using plug-ins.
  • It is easy to use and set up, with customizable themes that allow us to make our website appear unique.
  • Support is pretty good, and you can always get through to speak to a human when needed.
  • It is irritating that, if we customize our theme at all, then the ability to easily apply theme upgrades is stopped. Consequently, we have taken a decision to remain completely "standard," which does have its disadvantages.
  • It would be nice if the standard email messages were easier to find and customize, and that this could be done without breaking the theme upgradeability.
  • We couldn't run our business without an eCommerce platform.
It has scaled as far as we need it to. I assume that it scales further, but we have not tried to do so.
We are not using these features. We use the 'vanilla' product.
We used to use Volusion, but switched to BigCommerce when it became clear that Volusion failed to meet our needs. Migration was surprisingly easy and relatively painless.
BigCommerce is particularly well suited to users with limited technical ability who still want a sophisticated eCommerce enabled website, without paying a fortune for a bespoke solution.

Evaluating BigCommerce and Competitors

Yes - We initially used a platform called EROL, then moved to Volusion. We moved to BigCommerce because Volusion was difficult to use, didn't have all the facilities we required, and needed a lot of customisation.

Usability was the single most important factor, closely followed by features and then price. For us, it is critical that we can make updates to our product data quickly and easily, and that we can create a modern looking interface, all with no third-party support.
I'd do it exactly the same way, which was to tentatively choose the platform, and then implement and verify a selection of pages using a test account. If the test pages worked well, then we would set up a live account and move everything across to the new platform.

BigCommerce Implementation

We use a standard theme and do not customise it at all (because if we did, we couldn't get access to the immediate upgrades to the theme without doing a lot of work every time there was an upgrade).
Change management was minimal - It always takes longer to do something, and particularly to test it, than you expect.
