Overall Satisfaction with Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 1000)

We needed a platform that could support both internet router functionality, from as low as 1Gbps throughput, to as high as 10Gbps. We also needed a platform that could support OTV (Overlay Transport Virtualization). At the time that we purchased these devices, the only other 2 types of platforms that supported OTV were the Nexus 7K (reaching EoL and expensive) and the Catalyst 8500-series, which was brand new.
  • Lots of features
  • Proven and stable
  • OTV
  • High cost
  • Not enough 10G physical interfaces
  • Throughput flexibility through licensing
  • OTV
  • Routing protocols
  • Positive ROI for allowing us to use OTV to stretch VLANs and not need to purchase complex and expensive host-based replication
  • Negative ROI because the upgraded 10G routers are very expensive, both upfront and long-term with licensing and support
We needed tried and true device to support both internet edge and OTV functionality. While the ASR1K line is reaching end-of-life, the Catalyst 8500-series platform was brand new so we were not ready to invest in that platform; however, in hindsight, given Cisco has EoL'd the ASR1K for software/security, likely in mid/late 2025, we are disappointed in its longevity.

These routers work very well when at least 1Gbps is required at the Internet edge with BGP to dual ISPs but excel in that with licensing upgrades, can support up to 10Gbps. These routers also work well for providing OTV functionality, which is now present only on the Nexus 7K platform (going EoL) and the 8500-series Catalyst line (very new).
