Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (Cisco ACI)

I have implemented if for a large airline business. It's being used for the whole organisation and it replaced the legacy DC. It solved the biggest issues with the old STP and loops and simplified the L2 domain in a much cleaner way without understanding the underlying technical complexities. It's a great solution if you don't want to build the fabric manually.
  • Integration with vCenter
  • Integration with cloud
  • Legacy server connections
  • Automation
  • Initial learning curve is high
  • Multi-site doesn't work well
  • Faster and quick change process since ACI is fast to implement.
  • Integration with existing tools.
  • Scale - it's flexible to be scaled to new sites if needed in future.
ACI is more mature compare to other cloud and fabric products. It's proven on the Cisco nxos and the engineers have the flexibility of knowing the system. Compared to the competition, TAC support is better for Cisco and the documentation covers good use cases. Power to extend it to other DC and clouds is also another factor in our decision.
TAC support is good. Support for automation, programmability and future automation tools is good. The product roadmap is also good. Cisco is investing in ACI and coming up with new features. There is support for ACI Multi-Site Orchestrator and Cisco Cloud APIC for the existing on prem ACI setup.

Yes

Did Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (Cisco ACI) live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (Cisco ACI) go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (Cisco ACI) again?

Yes

It's well suited if you have multiple DC and if you want to stretch the VLAN across the DC. It's good for integration with vCenter as well. It's not so great if all the workloads are in a public cloud. It's well suited if there are mixed workloads i.e in private DC and in the cloud. Integration with micro-segmentation is a good use case.
