Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst Switches

  • Catalyst 2960-L Series
These [Cisco Catalyst 2960- L Series] switches are used in ODF closets, server racks, and other general secured networking locations within the businesses I currently support and have supported in the past. They are very reliable and the CLI is common with several other Cisco switch models. I have almost always purchased the rack-mountable 24- or 48-port models with 2 or 4 G-Bic ports for fiber optic connectivity between nodes. There have been a few smaller versions purchased for proprietary reasons. All have been incredibly reliable.
  • Uptime--they just keep running for years in most cases
  • Common command line interface for configuration
  • Options for PoE
  • Would be nice if they could provide two selectable power levels for PoE.
  • A bit slow to boot--four minutes maybe.
  • Redundant power supplies would be a great option.
  • Reliable, long lasting equipment.
  • Online documentation for configuration is plentiful.
  • I have had a PoE module fail in a switch, which left all PoE devices down.
  • The PoE module can be replaced.
At one site we were able to copy the configuration, then paste that configuration into 64 identical switches, edit each static IP, then walk away with a complete floor of switched machine banks that were secured to the PCI standards required in a short amount of time. That same company had six IDF closets with stacks of four switches in each that were also nearly identical, so we performed the same procedure with fast results.
VLAN management to segment network traffic is essential for some environments and simply convenient for others. The ability to secure certain kinds of traffic is easily achieved in the switch management. Another nice feature the CLI provides is several security features that can be assigned (per port or with a range).
The Cisco switch series in general far exceeds the quality and reliability of the 3Com switches I have used in the past. The fiber port G-Bic modules do not seem to communicate from a 3Com switch to a Cisco switch in my experience. That is possibly just in the models and switch types I was using at that time. The new Ubiquiti switches and equipment really have exceeded my expectations in quality and reliability. If I had to switch to a different brand of network gear, it would be Ubiquity at this time.

Do you think Cisco Catalyst Switches delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Cisco Catalyst Switches's feature set?

Yes

Did Cisco Catalyst Switches live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Cisco Catalyst Switches go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Cisco Catalyst Switches again?

Yes

Trunking a link between ethernet switch interfaces can carry the traffic of multiple VLANs over a single link. Stacking these switches with stack cables makes several in one closet easily managed through one open SSH connection. We stacked and trunked switches in IDF closets on top of one another in a hotel to more easily manage them at that location. VLAN management is securely achieved.
