Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Routers

  • Cisco ISR 800 Series
  • Cisco ISR 4000 Series
Cisco routers are used at the perimeter of our environment to terminate our ISP connections. While all internal users and our customer utilize these devices they are managed solely by a single department. We utilize Cisco routers due to their BGP convergence performance and our engineers' familiarity with IOS.
  • BGP convergence
  • Intuitive CLI
  • Feature-rich
  • Expensive
  • Embedded packet captures are not very intuitive
  • Rollback options/commit-confirm type commands found in Juniper and IOS-XR routers would be very helpful to see in IOS and IOS-XE
  • The large initial cost of ownership may make it difficult to initially deploy
  • Incredible product longevity allows for a solid ROI
  • Industry support and understanding of Cisco CLI make Cisco routers easy to support
The majority of our infrastructure utilizes Cisco equipment. We have never had any compatibility issues with other Cisco equipment. We have also had several acquisitions where other network vendors have been utilized. We have very few issues combining Cisco products with other vendors. This makes it more likely for us to continuing purchasing Cisco equipment even in environments with other vendor's equipment.
Our environment relies on Cisco's firewall and IPS deployment for security so we have not done much with security on the routers themselves.
Longevity our Cisco routers have always been a key selling point. We rely on having near 100% uptime to our application. Our Cisco routers continue to function flawlessly for years and have allowed us to maintain stellar uptimes.
We have used juniper routers in the past with success and feel like they are solid alternative. Our choice to continue purchasing Cisco routers stems from our familiarity with cisco operating system.
Cisco routers are the go-to router for any mid-size or large company network. The various model types make it easy to find a device that suits the companies use case and the industry understanding of Cisco makes it very simple to support. Cheaper options to Cisco exist which make Cisco harder to recommend for smaller companies.
