Overall Satisfaction with Cloudflare

I manage websites for a variety of small businesses. I also manage their emails. Having a reliable DNS is critical to my business. Cloudflare not only provides a reliable managed DNS solution for me, but it also provides DDoS protection and web application firewall if you enable traffic through Cloudflare. Most recently, Cloudflare introduced a better captcha to detect robots. Best of all, Cloudflare is free to start using.
  • Fast DNS
  • Reliable DNS resolution
  • Quick DNS propagation
  • Crowded UI as new features are released
  • WAF difficult to troubleshoot (diagnose where traffic is being blocked)
  • Built-in analytics not very useful
  • faster website leads to more conversion
  • reduced outages
  • reduced maintenance effort
Cloudflare is the best option for my business for my use cases aligns exactly with what Cloudflare provides. Fastly only offers 1 month of free trial while AWS Route 53 is heavily integrated with AWS cloud. I want the flexibility to launch my own VPS and have a CDN, DDoS protection for my websites. Cloudflare provides just that, all for free.
Cloudflare onboarding was extremely smooth. I just need to point my domain to Cloudflare DNS and I'm ready to go with all Cloudflare's DNS, DDoS, CDN, and WAF features. When we started with Cloudflare, Cloudflare didn't even have Registrar feature. Now with Registrar feature, we can register domain directly in Cloudflare. Also, Cloudflare's Registrar only charges the price for the domain that they pay for. In most cases, this is the cheapest option to get a domain as well.
I have never had to contact support for Cloudflare. Cloudflare has well-written documentation that allows me to configure and use Cloudflare without needing additional help. The DNS management console is very intuitive and easy to use. However, some figuring out is required if you want to configure your own web application firewall rules.

Cloudflare is suited for startups that need reliable DNS and DDoS protection for their Internet exposed assets. That is because startups usually don't have a lot of cash for more expensive services and Cloudflare is free to start. As an added bonus, Cloudflare provides free CDN services if you route traffic through Cloudflare's network (configurable at the DNS level). Cloudflare is less suited for large enterprises that need to integrate many different services with serverless functions. As I'm writing this review, Cloudflare only offers R2 (AWS S3 alternative) and Workers (AWS Lambda alternative). Cloudflare is developing more serverless products but I'm curious if they will do well if they move away too far from what they're good at (DNS and CDN).
