Overall Satisfaction with CommVault

We used CommVault to manage all the backups of our operation. A couple of years ago, we had different backup solutions to address different needs like PCs, windows servers, Linux servers, virtual environments, etc. So for each software, we had a console, and for each, we needed to set different policies. That was very difficult for the administration, for generating reports, etc. So for that, we looked for a centralized solution where we can address it all in one place and cover all the environments.
  • You can do backups of your servers, PC, and virtual environments in just one console.
  • The policy setup is very granular, so you can do almost whatever you need.
  • The compression and duplication really save you a lot storage space, which means less hardware.
  • The backup time are really good, so the maintenance window for each backup is fast.
  • The administration console is not too intuitive, and it's hard to understand if you do not have the knowledge.
  • You need certificate training to really understand how CommVault works.
  • The policy creation is kind of difficult, because the way it works is different.
  • We could cover all the critical applications
  • We could implement a realistic disaster recovery plan that really work for the company
  • We reduced the footprint of or datacenter, so that contribute to reducing the cooling and energy
We selected it because it was the leader in the market and works really well for the needs that we address in our company. We changed 4 backup solutions for only one, reducing the administration time and the cost of licensing. In one place we can do backup directly to disk or tape depending on the scenario.
It is well suited when you need to do backups in just one place for your PCs, physical servers, and virtual environments. If you have a lot of servers, the deduplication really helps in saving storage space, so you will save money. The licensing methods work well for almost all the scenarios that you could have in your company. For example, you can license for elements, and elements can be a server, so if these servers host your DWH you could save some money. The negative is that you cannot mix the licensing methods, so you can pick for elements or for space. The best will depend on your needs.
