Our sales team primarily uses D&B Hoovers to research prospective customers and new customers. It helps us verify important details about the strength of a new customer and their financial rating. As we research prospective customers by industry, it helps to identify potential contacts to begin our sales contact strategy.

When researching accounts, we are primarily reviewing the company's financial risk, annual sales, facility size as well as associated companies. We do review contacts to see who is listed and at what positions. We find it especially helpful when the owner's email addresses and contact information is included, as that provides some assurance of higher-level people to contact when warranted. If the company is also associated with other companies, it gives us a sense of its size and global presence.
D&B Hoovers offers most of the contact information we need, however, there have been cases where email addressees are not available. We try to initially contact people via email, so that can sometimes limit our initial contact strategy. We do appreciate it when there are multiple contacts at a company, as it gives us a broader range of people to more appropriately target.

D&B Hoovers provides a great database for searching company information and better understanding a new customer's ability to pay and sales potential. We have identified several customers as poor financial risks who have been challenging to initially work with. This has enabled us to maintain prepayment terms, rather than extend open terms and risk not being paid.
