Overall Satisfaction with Hotjar

Hotjar is used for heatmaps and screen recordings to help give us insight into how users are interacting with our site. It's used by the product team so they can see exactly how what they build is being used, ultimately allowing for quicker iteration. It addresses our need of where Google Analytics falls short.

  • Behavior visualization
  • Video rendering issues
  • Free plan limits
  • Heatmaps for pages with menus aren't always clear

Google Analytics is a much more robust platform than Hotjar, but works great as a complement to Google Analytics - in other words, it was a matter of choosing both, not either/or. While there are workarounds for them on Google Analytics, heatmaps and screen recordings are much more intuitive on Hotjar.

Hotjar is a valuable tool for gaining insight into user behavior, with the most useful features being heatmaps and screen recordings. It works well as a complement to Google Analytics, and for its price, it's worth it. If your site has plenty of menus, dropdowns, or modals, it might not be the best option for you.
