IntelliJ IDEA meets .NET!
Score 8 out of 10
Overall Satisfaction with JetBrains Rider
All .NET developers in our company have freedom of choice regarding the IDE they want to use, however, we are only using 2 products: JetBrains Rider and Visual Studio. JetBrains Rider is mainly used for rapid application development and for building prototypes. It is used both by developers, but also by QA testers in their daily work.
- The license cost per developer allows for some savings.
- Very positive impact for projects migrating from Java to .NET.
Microsoft Visual Studio IDE is the oldest player on the market and it has some really good features, however. JetBrains Rider despite being on the market for a much shorter time is an excellent IDE solution as well—super fast and very stable. Frequent updates are very neat and always bring additional value. Visual Studio Code, on the other hand, is quite simple and not that good for enterprise types of projects.
Customer support provided by JetBrains is quite fast and effective. The issues we have encountered were solved within days, which we find reasonable and a very adequate time frame. Bug fixes are added to releases depending on their severity which makes perfect sense. However, we have not encountered any issue which we would consider to be a major problem.
Do you think JetBrains Rider delivers good value for the price?
Are you happy with JetBrains Rider's feature set?
Did JetBrains Rider live up to sales and marketing promises?
Did implementation of JetBrains Rider go as expected?
Would you buy JetBrains Rider again?
Evaluating Rider and Competitors
Yes - Our decision was to completely replace Microsoft Visual Studio with JetBrains Rider by the end of this year. The main reason is the fact that the ecosystem of JetBrains products suits our development requirements. In addition, it is very easy for anyone to switch from one JetBrains IDE to another which gives us enormous amounts of flexibility.
- Product Features
- Product Usability
- Prior Experience with the Product
JetBrains Rider usability is the most important factor in our decision since it allows our teams to achieve quantified objectives with increased effectiveness and efficiency. It is clearly visible that Rider was designed with usability in mind, setting early focus on users and tasks to enable developers and QA engineers in their day to day work.
We are generally very happy with our assessment process for evaluating third party products, however in case of IDEs used by majority of our employees we are considering to start with a survey among selected group of potential users to figure out what might be their favorite tool before doing research of existing products on the market.
