Overall Satisfaction with Kaltura
Kaltura solves multiple problems for our organization but our main demand has been sharing professionally produced video content created across all users in a seamless and easily searchable way. Our school has thousands of videos produced for our online graduate program but there was no easy way to share them in our LMS for other end users. Additionally, Kaltura has made it very easy for instructors and students to produce their own ad-hoc videos 'on the fly' from within our LMS (Blackboard).
- The Kapture Space tool has helped instructors create a desktop recording and supplemental lectures such as voice over PPTs with minimal software knowledge.
- The in-line quizzing features have made for a more interactive user experience. Students have become far more likely to watch a video all the way through and the tool integrates smoothly with the LMS grade book.
- Accessibility is always a primary concern. Kaltura integrates well with other third-party providers such as 3 Play Media or DotSub to create captioning and interactive transcripts.
- The quizzing feature is pretty good but it could use some more options.
- An in-line polling feature vs a straight quizzing feature would be helpful.
- It's not a cheap tool but it has helped us better integrate our online course media into the face-to-face classroom setting. It has been a key piece of software for exploring the 'flipped classroom' model.
- Giving faculty the ability to easily create their own course media has freed up precious time slots in our recording studio(s) as well as freed up the support staff to work on other projects.
- The in-line quizzing feature has positively impacted student's knowledge retention and their grades have, on average, been better in courses that leverage this feature in Kaltura.
- The individual level analytics help us better identify students who may be struggling or have become disengaged with the course content.
Panopto is a much cheaper option (based on a pay per view model) but the user experience is not nearly as good. The video portal UI is difficult to navigate and the recording feature requires downloading separate desktop software that differs greatly from PC to MAC. Inline quizzing features are far behind Kaltura. It does have stronger analytics tools but they are the type that are better exported to .csv and processed by an advanced Excel user.
Vimeo Pro is a very cheap and solid option for a small program or business that is just starting out, but it isn't highly searchable, it doesn't support a large body of users and does not offer any type of online features. It isn't really much more than a repository but it is a bit nicer than using freeware such as YouTube.
