Overall Satisfaction with Marketo

Marketo is managed by the marketing department in our company. We are an ecommerce B2C company so Marketo is used to send all operational emails like account updates and legally required communication. But it's also used as a marketing tool. We incorporate email marketing, direct mail and SMS texting into our Marketo campaigns all designed to increase conversion and keep leads moving through the sales funnel.
  • Marketo is a one stop shop. It's a robust system that does much more than email marketing. We use Marketo for all things automation. From SMS text/direct mail/emails to lead scoring and data management.
  • Marketo is very user friendly. The interface is easy to navigate and manage.
  • Makreto listens to its users. Monthly releases offer new features that have often been suggested by users.
  • Marketo support is very easy to access and use and they area always quick to respond to opened tickets.
  • Expensive. Marketo really isn't feasible for small to medium sized companies simply because of the cost.
  • Doesn't offer a survey tool.
  • Product Launches
  • Customer Service
  • Prospecting / New Business
Product launches - our goal is to increase awareness among our customer base of the products/services we offer.
Customer Service - our goal is to show customers they're always on our minds and we're easy to reach whenever they need us.
Prospecting - our goal is to increase sales through use of targeted email blast to purchased lists.
We chose Marketo because of it's integration with Salesforce and because we expected to grow to a quite large database size and felt Marketo was better equipped to handle larger volume.
I would recommend Marketo to any company that can afford it. The only time I wouldn't recommend is if it's a smaller company that's looking to do limited automation. If you're looking to just automate a few emails to nurture leads, there are many smaller products out there that can do that well at less cost.

Learnings & Advice

We've become a lot more efficient since starting with Marketo. Our customer communications are now sent in real time with very little employee time required since we can automate triggers based on actions taken by customers/leads. An MA platform is a necessity for all marketing teams in my opinion! Your team will be able to accomplish so much more in less time using this tool.
I've actually used Marketo for short surveys. I simply create custom fields to house the answer to each question, then plug those fields into a form and make it look nice visually. Drop that form on a landing page template, add some intro text and you've got a survey! I'll send a link out in an email and can then segment my audience based on responses and/or send different content based on responses. The possibilities are endless though, you could have Marketo take any action needed based on a specific response. Plus you can have alert emails set up to send completed surveys directly to whoever is interested internally so they get the feedback in real time.
Check out the endless resources in Marketo's community. The product docs are fantastic and super helpful. Plus there are countless discussions amongst other Marketo users that may have been looking for the same answer you need. You can read through old ones or start a new one yourself and inevitably, someone will respond and try to help you out!
Most of my Marketo knowledge has come from the community. Don't be afraid to put a question out there. Chances are someone has encountered the same thing at some point and likely can now pass on some tips and tricks they've uncovered or created over the years. Plus, if a topic becomes super common on the community, Marketo will notice and make changes accordingly to better serve customers.
Don't copy and paste your email text from a Word doc to the email editor. It inevitably will mess up your formatting and will drive you mad over time. Just take the minute or two it takes to retype it into the editor. Trust me, it'll save you some frustration over time!

Marketo Reliability

Marketo is easy to use now matter how basic or robust your automation strategies are. It's easy to set up and easy to continually build on what you have. After a year or two of using it you'll step back and realize how many email and campaigns you actually have running and it'll surprise you because, even though you may have doubled or tripled what you started with, you never noticed any change in system performance.
Marketo support is great! It's quick and easy to submit a support ticket and someone always contacts you within 24 hours (or faster if it's a high priority issue). They are friendly and always work with you until your problem is 100% resolved, no matter how long it takes. Plus I like that Marketo is proactive in communicating known issues with the system. I receive email alerts about this issues which helps me know it's being worked on. They also follow up with status updates on those known issues which is great.
The system can slow down based on the number of leads in your database but that number has to get pretty high before you start to see an decline in performance (couple million+). Overall, the software runs seamlessly with very rare/if any system wide issues. It is much better than HubSpot in that sense. I've experienced several "functions unavailable" messages from HubSpot in the past.
