Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Azure

Microsoft Azure is being use to connect with Azure specific customers and to optimize Microsoft workloads. While competing clouds have strong Microsoft options, the complete feature set and performance tuning of Azure for Microsoft workloads still wins also. Also, with the new pricing structure announcement, Azure becomes more cost competitive for those Microsoft workloads as well.
  • Microsoft effectively tunes for their own applications
  • Creates specific products for Microsoft deployments
  • Decent Infrastructure as Code (IaC) support
  • Maintains some Microsoft exclusive design patterns that the industry has not adopted
  • Steep learning curve for the non Microsoft crowd
  • Expensive
  • Handling often complex Microsoft upgrade processes and procedures
  • Decreased downtime on Microsoft applications
  • Cost savings on new Microsoft cloud licensing pricing structure
Microsoft Azure is very usable for Microsoft centric developers, but very hard to pick up for classic cloud provider users (with a focus on Linux). As a newer Microsoft developer, some of the design patterns and standards seemed undocumented and very hard to discern. After a few months reverse engineering the Microsoft Azure CLI, I was finally able to determine how to use the product.
Microsoft support is one of the best in class. I had a very specific issue with a Microsoft Azure Function App and called support. The support line could not immediately identify the issue, but recorded it. After a few days, a microsoft support engineer called me back and fixed the issue, with a detailed technical explanation!
Microsoft Azure is competitive within the IaaS/PaaS systems, especially for Microsoft centric organizations with existing Microsoft contracts. With existing spends with Microsoft and potential Azure discounts, Azure can be a compelling platform when balancing cost with features. PaaS services need to be a good fit, Microsoft organizations can find a good fit with Azure.
Microsoft Azure is the best fit for Microsoft centric organizations. For organizations with Microsoft centric developers, the development process will be much more seamless than with other clouds. The design patterns, systems, etc. will be more intuitive than other cloud systems. The Azure cloud fits for Microsoft/Office 365 extensions perfectly.
