Overall Satisfaction with MongoDB Atlas

MongoDB is a standard NoSQL database within our enterprise. We are considering applications for cloud dbs and MongoDB Atlas is a choice for NoSQL cloud deployments or DBaaS. I am working on a project where we are looking at modernizing our platform and have defined a future state architecture. MongoDB Atlas can be used for storing some non-relational attributes that can be stored in document form where the schemas may vary from record to record. And MongoDB Atlas is very quick to provision. Getting servers provision within our organization can be very slow given the SLAs some teams have. Atlas gets us prototyping and coding almost immediately.
  • DB Provisioning.
  • DB Management.
  • Live Migration Service.
  • Positive - Faster provisioning so we don't have development teams waiting.
  • Positive - Automated backups and server management - eliminates need for dedicated DBAs.
MongoDB is a great product but on premise deployments can be slow. So we turned to Atlas. We also looked at Redis Labs and we use Redis as our side cache for app servers. But we love using MongoDB Atlas for cloud deployments, especially for prototyping because we can get started immediately. And the cost is low and easy to justify.
We've never had any issues with MongoDB Atlas and when we've had questions, MongoDB has a quick turnaround on getting them answered. I would give them 5 stars or 10/10. When you don't have problems, that's the best. But also getting quick answers to tech questions is great. Also I would like to mention that MongoDB has an online learning center offering a number of totally free classes. These free classes help educate us so that we are not constantly calling on Tech Support.

Do you think MongoDB Atlas delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with MongoDB Atlas's feature set?

Yes

Did MongoDB Atlas live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of MongoDB Atlas go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy MongoDB Atlas again?

Yes

Atlas is a NoSQL DB so the use cases being solved need to be appropriate for NoSQL. It's really hard to think of what you can't do with Atlas. Atlas is great for building a data lake. We have prototyped an application where various json files come in and we load them into Atlas for processing downstream. I would say if you're building a ledger, put that into SQL, but Atlas is definitely perfect for those NoSQL scenarios. We are also considering using Atlas for indicative and demographic information but not for financial information because the financial information fits better into our SQL deployment.

Evaluating MongoDB Atlas and Competitors

  • Price
  • Product Reputation
  • Vendor Reputation
  • Existing Relationship with the Vendor
The single most important factor was the fact it is DBaaS or cloud based. We are able to get fast provisioning of servers when we need them, almost immediately. This keeps our development teams building software and designing applications. To deploy servers on-prem typically takes 30-90 days and requires involvement of a lot of people. I realize this is our own bureaucracy which is why we use Atlas.
We defined a number of criteria. Automated backups, Quick provisioning. Ability to easily migrate from on-prem to cloud, automated server management. Cost. MongoDB ATlas was tops in all of our categories. We would probably add some additional criteria if doing the eval again, but MongoDB Atlas meets our needs. We are very happy with the product and our selection process led us there.
