Overall Satisfaction with NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP

We are leveraging NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP for our cloud migration to AWS and also for Disaster Recovery purposes. NetApp [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] has been huge in helping us stand up a cloud-based DR environment for our Tier1 and Tier 2 applications. Since we leverage NetApp for our primary and secondary on-prem storage (block and file-based storage), [NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP] has been a nice supplement to allow us to stand up NetApp volumes in the cloud using a familiar interface and move storage workloads fairly seamlessly between on and off-prem. We have been very satisfied with what NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP has brought to our storage capabilities as we make our digital transformation and has helped us solve some of our data gravity issues.
  • Migrate on-prem storage volumes to AWS
  • Provides Disaster Recovery in the cloud options
  • NetApp [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] has been very stable so far!
  • Integration with Azure and GCP is behind compared to AWS
  • NetApp support can be "touch and go"
  • NetApp Documentation seems a bit lacking
  • Expanded our Disaster Recovery capabilities - lowered overall RPO & RTO
  • Streamlined our storage migration to the cloud by solving our data gravity issues
  • Relatively easy to administer if you have previous OnTap experience.
We looked at Rubrik for data protection with the ability to stand up volumes in the cloud. We also looked at Pure Storage's capabilities to achieve FlashArray volumes in the cloud as well. Neither of them could deliver on the NetApp [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] capabilities and since we were already NetApp customers we decided to keep our cloud storage technology under the same umbrella. The price-point for NetApp [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] was very compelling as well.
Technical Support from NetApp is usually pretty solid. Occasionally, we will get a level 1 tech that is a waste of time and then we have to ask to get the case escalated. Our Sales team is pretty attentive though and will follow up with us on new releases and features. I will say when a case gets escalated that they can usually provide a fix to our issue pretty quickly.

Do you think NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP's feature set?

Yes

Did NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP again?

Yes

NetApp [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] has reduced our overall cloud storage expenses by giving us more options rather than the default AWS sku's. Their data reduction algorithm helps compress and deduplicate the data on the wire and at rest to help save on egress and regular storage consumption costs as well. We also have better visibility into our storage footprint so we can target old and unused data to get rid of it to save money too.
NetApp [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] has been beneficial in helping us get high-availability for our cloud-based storage very easily since all of our tier 1 and tier 2 applications get built across multiple availability zones, and [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] can handle this via automation. Since it is very easy to instrument creation and deletion of [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] volumes via api - we have been able to automate 85% of our use cases for our server and application platform builds.
I would highly recommend that companies take a look at NetApp [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] if they are looking to make the transition from on-prem to cloud-based storage or need the ability to move data between both. If your storage admins are familiar with regular OnTap - they should be able to pickup [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] administration pretty easily. Having the ability to migrate File Shares to the cloud while keeping the management of them under the same pane of glass has been very beneficial for us as well.
