Overall Satisfaction with New Relic

New Relic is currently being used across various departments in the whole organization. Specifically, the Operations, Development, and Reliability teams within our organization use New Relic's Application Performance Monitoring and Infrastructure Monitoring features to monitor how the various components of our technology stack are performing. During times of peak load, non-engineers will use various dashboards to evaluate the health of our platform and escalate anomalies to on-call engineers.
  • Provide insight into your applications performance.
  • Reduce MTTR during tech-related incidents.
  • Quickly observe what kind of database/API operations your applications are performing.
  • New Relic One transition was confusing.
  • Interface can be confusing/overwhelming.
  • SSO integration still requires the organization to manually add the account.
  • The UI is still a hybrid of their classic interface and their New Relic One interface.
  • Reduce MTTR during technical incidents.
  • Provide non-technical contributors insights into the performance of our platform.
The ability to monitor the inner workings of our various components of our platform has been valuable to our organization. Being able to rapidly pinpoint performance anomalies allows our organization to more efficiently assign technical resources to potential problems.
Our organization is still working through our cloud strategy, and New Relic has played no role in the mitigation of risk or accelerating the rate in which our organization is adopting cloud technologies. When we choose to migrate the various components of our stack that are leveraging New Relic to "the cloud" then we will use it to evaluate how the stack is performing.
New Relic's rich API and integration with PagerDuty has allowed our DevOps team to more rapidly diagnose problems as they occur. The team was also able to create dashboards that non-technical organization members are able to leverage to have more insight into the operational aspects of our platform.
New Relic is a fantastic tool to gain insights into how well your application is performing. If you have the budget, it is one of the best tools I've used of its class. However, if your organization is operating on a budget, there are now relatively mature open source APM offerings on the market.

Using New Relic

As an engineer, New Relic has been very quick and easy for me to pick up/install/use. It has been less easy for some of the less technical-minded folks in our organization and their UI still is inconsistent multiple years after refactoring their platform to be New Relic One.
