Overall Satisfaction with Pantheon

Pantheon is being used mostly by the marketing department with some IT involvement as well. We are using it to host all of our external-facing websites. Most of the sites are on Wordpress but our flagship site, chesapeakeregional.com is on Drupal 8, soon to be upgraded to Drupal 9. As a powerful WebOps platform, Pantheon solved two related issues: time and resources available for site development.
  • Powerful WebOps platform from soup to nuts
  • Swift experimentation tools
  • Agile development
  • Incredibly fast sites and load times
  • Secure and reliable servers
  • Support packages are a little thin
  • Organizations feature does not automatically pull up when logging in
  • Cannot have a site associated with multiple organizations. This feature would make it easier to integrate workflows between home organizations and agencies.
  • Easy to spin up a new site
  • On server development
  • Global CDN
  • Engineered for Wordpress and Drupal
  • Pantheon costs marginally more than our previous hosting provider
  • Our previous hosting provider had site traffic limits and would crash the site when we broke that limit
  • Further, it required a great deal of on server development, costing dozens of hours per month to maintain properly--on that front, Pantheon has saved us upwards of 10% of our annual marketing budget
Pantheon beat out the competition on five fronts:
  1. Security: Media Temple, in particular, ranked low in this area.
  2. Developer Tools: Here, Media Temple also ranked low.
  3. Support: This was Pantheon's weakest area. We do have a support package but it would be nice to have better support for the level we pay for.
  4. Scalability: Pantheon easily scales with our site traffic with no interruption to performance.
  5. Usability: Pantheon shone in this category in particular. It was obviously easy to use, even in a quick demo situation. It has proven easy to use especially in a live environment. We have been able to quickly train up other marketing staff to use the platform when needed. AWS is by far the least usable option listed here.

Pantheon is perfect for any size organization. It can be a helpful supplement to organizations with development teams that have the manpower and need for custom server set-ups (like custom app development) to rapidly spin up external-facing sites. It can also be perfect for organizations that do not have such resources and still need quality hosting that is easy to spin up and manage. Indeed, this is Pantheon's bread and butter. It is truly hard to imagine a scenario where Pantheon could not add something to the mix.
