Overall Satisfaction with Parallels Remote Application Server

Parallels Remote Application Server has allowed us to implement a flexible and customizable work environment comprised of thin clients, virtual desktops, and individuals working from home. It was relatively easy to set up and is simple to maintain.
  • Virtual Desktop Environments
  • Integration with Thin Clients
  • Easy user/session management via portal
  • Sessions will sometimes suspend and fall into a 'sleep' state where they don't fully disconnect. This leaves users confused as to why they can't actually get on their computers.
  • Cursors on thin clients will often disappear when hovering over different applications.
  • Not all software can be virtualized and utilized in the "published apps" method of implementation. This isn't really Parallel's fault, but it's definitely something to be aware of. Some users may need a full VDI if working from home over just the apps.
  • Our situation was a little odd. Before Parallels, we had a remote work solution that allowed for 10 users on at a time, and the service we were using was free as it was the end of the license and not updating/upgrading.
  • With Parallels, we went from paying $0 to $5000 (over three years) and from 10 users to 25. Depending on how you look at that it's either a positive or negative impact. For us, it was positive as it allowed people to go remote during Covid.
  • Positive Impact: increased ability to work remotely for people that were sick or out of town.
We have been able to deploy Parallels on desktops/laptops and thin clients. The thin client deployment was a little more time-intensive than the simple "install and configure" that it took for the PCs, but that was to be expected. We were able to tie access to the virtual applications to Active Directory permissions, which was also very helpful.
We have definitely used the permission policies, MFA, encryption, access control, and SSL security capabilities provided by Parallels. It helps with peace of mind that the information people are accessing remotely isn't actually being sent across the internet unprotected.
During setup and deployment Parallels staff was very responsive and helpful.
