Overall Satisfaction with SAP Extension Suite (formerly part of SAP Cloud Platform)

SAP Extension Suite is the go-to solution for any SAP customer transitioning to the cloud. It's basically a very SAP-centric Web IDE that brings quality-of-life or very specific features you would not get otherwise, unless you're integrating your core SAP product (ECC, CRM, S/4...) with a third-party solution. We primarily use it for Fiori development (SAP own web technology) since there is little added-value to go with a non-SAP product for that specific use.
  • Lots of quality-of-life improvements specific to the SAP landscape
  • Direct integration & simplified preview with SAP core products (ECC, S/4, etc.)
  • Agile process automation and delivery for DevOps teams
  • Still in an early stage where you miss some obvious features that any generic IDE would offer
  • You would think developers using the previous version of the product would already have their bearings, but SAP changed so much that they have to learn everything again
  • Performance varies a lot depending on your pricing plan, especially if you have a growing development team
  • Faster development cycle due to native integration with SAP products
  • Negative short-term ROI due to the lack of training material and significant differences with the previous version of the same tool (SAP Web IDE)
  • Tighter integration with corporate programming guidelines since SAP Extension Suite offers great integration with DevOps pipeline solutions
There is no direct competitor since the platform is specifically designed to support SAP's own solutions. Technically, you could use the product for any type of programming but it's unlikely non-SAP specialists would actually do that. Again, the tight integration with your own SAP systems drastically improve your time-to-market since you can build, test, track and deploy changes a lot faster.

Because SAP offers unique features that are specifically designed for their core products, SAP Extension Suite is a must-have for any SAP-centric customer or service company. You can easily import and export your code directly from the SAP systems, previewing changes in real-time and benefit from predefined templates designed for the most common SAP use cases. But then again, the product still feels very new and would benefit from performance and UX improvements.
