Overall Satisfaction with SAP Master Data Governance

SAP Master Data Governance is used by certain parts of our organization that use SAP A4 HANA. Kindly note that some parts of our organization use Oracle ERP and PeopleSoft and that's where MDG is not implemented for technical reasons. This tool helps improves compliance & risk management and business process outcomes.
  • Improves operational efficiencies
  • Improves compliance
  • Improves risk management
  • Improves data management
  • We have experienced some technical challenges needing rollback of build. This is due to poor design decisions and can't be attibuted the product itself.
  • Positive - Better data governance
  • Positive - Compliance made easy
  • Positive - Better visibility and reporting
We did not evaluate any COTS product as an alternative. We have evaluated internal process changes as an option. However, [SAP Master Data Governance] solution provided far greater value for money than any process improvements. That being said, [Master Data Governance] is not an alternative to good process. It compliments good data management and well defined processes. Engaging experienced consultants will improve outcomes of [Master Data Governance] implementation.
We have experienced great support from SAP for SAP Master Data Governance product. It was done together with SAP S4 HANA implementation and upgrade. By engaging with SAP on best practices, we have minimized the project timelines while also maximizing the value delivered to business.
Being an end user and having involved as a superuser during the implementation phase, I can say that it is fairly easy to learn and use SAP [Master Data Governance]. We had a strong change management focus where everyone required was enabled. So if such aspects are taken care of, business will benefit too.
Our reason for selecting SAP Master Data Governance was
  • It offered lot of prebuilt content that we could get started with
  • It had accelerators for faster implementation
  • We had very few components that need development from scratch and that is owing to our specific needs
  • Business rules were easy to modify and activate
Our implementation style was to have a golden record of all build components which were created our rigorous requirement phase. After which the golden record was leveraged as a reusable component with tighter change controls. My engagement was to the extend of workflows and by using a tighter change management control we are able to reduce friction and while improving speed at which enhancements are delivered to business.
What worked really well -
  • Our multi-erp supplier data deduplication excercise, material data governnace went well.
Where did we face challenges -
  • SAP Ariba Supplier Lifecycle and Performance module documentation and SAP Master Data Governance module documentation was conflicting each other in some areas.
  • This led to us putting SAP Ariba - SAP [Master Data Governance] integration until SAP came up with a feature release that supported out of the box integration.
Large organizations with multiple business units operating across regions and geographies will benefit greatly from SAP Master Data Governance. Companies like ours where acquisitions are a norm, we face severe challenges with IT Data consolidation due to too much duplicate data. Our procurement, finance and sales data go a huge facelift with SAP [Master Data Governance].
