SAP S/4HANA Cloud Solution
Overall Satisfaction with SAP S/4HANA Cloud
Our company implemented the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Solution and we went live with this solution in April of 2019.
Pros
- The entire solution we are using is Fiori app-based, displaying tiles/apps that are assigned to each user.
- Even though we only have 6 months worth of live data now, most of the standard SAP S/4HANA Cloud transactions run quickly to report on that entire period of data.
- New functionality is released every 3 months.
Cons
- The quarterly upgrades are great for new functionality but they do put us in a position of dealing with freeze periods and testing on a quarterly basis.
- Some standard EDI transactions were not ready to implement with the long term SOAP technology so we had to use the old IDOC technology to get things in place of Go-Live.
- It is not easy to identify simple data or configuration issues because we do not have the ability to run debug or use the data dictionary directly anymore.
- Long term this solution is very cost-effective compared to the traditional upgrade process and on-prem solution we would have gone with.
- With less customization, there is less support needed to write custom solutions for teams and the more time we can spend identifying new functionality that we can use.
To us, the SAP S/4HANA Cloud solution was an easy choice as we already were running SAP and our overall corporate goal is to stay with SAP.

SAP Adoption
- Third-party professional services
We partnered with Echelon Solutions Group LLC (now Argano) at the time. We worked together to complete the implementation in 18 months roughly. It was a very successful project and we enjoyed working with the Echelon team, both management and implementation specialists.
We had all of our users engaged the entire project. From our initial meetings for requirements gathering, through configuration and development, through testing and training. We did not have a very large team but everyone was engaged on a regular basis which was very helpful to not only completing the project but to having a smooth go-live.
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled - We did get some pushback from users who had been on the SAP GUI for so long, they really didn't like the Web based system at first, but over time they grew to like it and embraced it. Because we were on the public cloud we had to move away from all the Custom transactions which had been developed over years and use SAP Best Practices - this was also a challenge but once people learned to embrace it they really liked it as we were able to get new functionality every quarter with the quarterly upgrades from SAP.
We used the built in testing tools to not only test our processes each quarter but we also used it to help train our resources, especially new ones. We would have them use the tool and see how the processes worked in our Test system before they were working in our Prod system.
The quarterly upgrades happen no matter what so we did a good job reviewing what was changing with each upgrade and we shared that information with the entire team. We worked hard to document changes and test them during the two week upgrade window. We also used the Testing Tool to verify existing processes were not broken during the upgrade which helped a lot.
We used what SAP provided us to use and we really pushed our users to embrace these tools as well. It wasn't always easy but when the team finally bought into the new processes and functionality things really started to go well. The S/4HANA Cloud was the perfect solution for our company and we enjoyed using it.
We were early adopters to this new system and we struggled some with external vendor tools and getting them to work with it, such as EDI, Vertex tax software, Credit Card software, etc. We changed all of the software around SAP as part of the process which really added the most work and time to our schedule. I think most of these tools work well now but at the time a lot of them were new and trying to figure out how to work with the public cloud as well.
