Overall Satisfaction with SEMRush

SEMRush was used within the whole organization at my last job. The best part of the tool is that it integrates many aspects of a good SEO tool. Being a consulting [company] it was always important for us to get a complete overview of the overall performance and important KPIs of any given website/client. SEMRush was always to the point to provide us needed input for best possible performance overview.
  • First and foremost, it's an all-in-one marketing toolkit and provides an overview to all the major KPIs for any given website.
  • Also, I love how you can choose the country right before adding the URL of the domain one wants to analyze.
  • Also, the analysis of paid traffic/keywords also helps not just in SEO but also in SEM.
  • The fact that one can do backlink, keyword and competitive analysis, rank audits just under one window is great about SEMRush.
  • Often I have realized that it crashed when a heavy amount of data was exported. Of course, I don't know if it's my PC/browser or the tool itself.
  • SEMRush can also work on making working on multiple devices/platforms easier. This would improve the usability a lot.
  • The tool itself has a steep learning curve which is not necessarily bad as every detailed/comprehensive tool is a little complicated. But the UI/UXcan surely has a room for improvement.
  • Like mentioned before, it has been mostly a positive impact for us. As tool contains many different aspects for SEO and SEM purposes it eliminated the need for us to buy different tools for different things like for backlink analysis (Ahrefs, majestic SEO) etc.
  • Also the positive point is the pricing strategy for SEMRush. The tool provided an option to try it for free in the beginning (of course with limited insights) which made it easier for us to decide If we wanted to go with this tool. Also, as mentioned in the first point, having one tool instead of 5 made it possible to have a positive ROI.
  • A small negative was the fact we couldn't connect the tool to our Google Analytics. It wasn't a big negative but it would have been great to have combined insights.
SEMRush has a much stronger position when you compare it to other alternatives. The reason being that there are only a few tools that provide an overall service including both SEO and SEM. Also, the fact that it allows competitor analysis and a side by side analysis of KPIs like domain strength, SERP rankings etc., is one of the major advantages SEMRush has over other tools.
I can barely think of any scenario where SEMRush is less relevant. The reason I say this is because for any organization which had a produce/service which is cold online and has competitors this tool will drive a lot of value. It is a complete toolset for companies to analyze their online landscape, competitors, where they stand online and their online brand footprint. It very well covers SEO and SEM audits.

Evaluating SEMRush and Competitors

The single most important factor for choosing SEMRush was because it's a one-stop tool for all major marketing KPI analysis. It beautifully integrates SEO and SEM all under one tool. We decided to keep everything centralized in one tool so that we wouldn't have to use different tools and work with reports extracted from those tools.
I always consider how the function a particular software performs and how it adds value to the current requirement the organization has. This is how we chose SEMRush as the tool to access the SEO and SEM performance of our clients. I wouldn't change my selection process. One thing I would consider more is the usability of the tool.

Using SEMRush

The reason I just gave it a 8 was the fact that it could be a little better with the UX/UI, as someone who is not aware of SEM/SEO terms can get lost in the tool. The tool itself has a deep learning curve which is not bad but the layout can be improved to make it easy to use.

  • Competitor Analysis is surely great to perform with SEMRush. It's very simple and very intuitively integrated. Also, a very value driven function for agencies and consultancies.
  • Regular webinars and blog posts on how to better use the tool and also about other information updates going on in the SEO/SEM world makes the tool one of the best in the category.
  • Keyword analysis and active SEO recommendation makes the tool the best in the industry. Very few tools provide to the point recommendation that are hands-on.
  • Just the interface is a little difficult to use.
  • When exporting the data from the tool, often it crashes but does so less over the time.
