Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Monitoring network traffic and flows, monitoring bandwidth to determine offenders/abusers of the network or to find the source of a problem.

Pros and Cons

Performance baseline for network traffic analysis
GUI is interactive allowing drag and drop metrics on the dashboard
Alerting via email of sudden bandwidth/traffic

Graphs and mapping could use some improvement
Application monitoring is not always helpful

Return on Investment

Helps our IT staff to be proactive in identifying problems in network or applications
Does have a bit of a learning curve to new users.

Alternatives Considered

Wireshark and LogicMonitor

NetScout, Wireshark, LogicMonitor were tested - but these were not robust enough or user friendly enough to cover everything that we needed to have covered.

Support Rating

I gave it a 10 - while I think it could use some small improvements, overall this is a very efficient product and the company provides good support when needed.

While there are free alternatives for smaller networks, if you have a medium to larger scale network this is worth the cost for the reporting, monitoring, alerting, and helping you find problems before the phone calls start coming in.

SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) is worth the investment.
