Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor
We use SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor within our department to monitor our core, distribution, and access layers, as well as a few servers. Overall it keeps us on top of issues that occur due to various network outages by alerting the on-call personnel to an issue that can be assessed right away.
Pros
- Monitors network equipment by using common SNMP MIBs.
- Monitors detailed information, including routing table changes, and custom SNMP MIB's with very little work.
- Rapid alerting system that has a variety of forwarding options.
Cons
- Network mapping tool is great, but could use additional improvements in automatically detecting L2/L3 topology.
- Grouping items, by group or by dependency is helpful, but groups/dependencies do not have the ability to interoperate.
- Alert capabilities are pretty good overall, but wish it had more granularity for escalations.
- Better resolution times, which results in higher network uptime.
- Quick and easy to get started with, not very cumbersome at all.
- Provides easy analysis of where a potential problem may occur in the future.
I've personally used SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor and Network Configuration Manager for about 10 years and it has made the task of keeping the network up and running much easier. Much more granular control than options like Nagios, MRTG, and PRTG.
