Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor

We use it within a single department to track uptime and inventory of about 4000 field devices on vast private WAN.
  • Tracking network inventory and uptime.
  • Extensibile to include other functions if needed.
  • If something does not exist, the Online help can show you how to do it, and the system allows you to write a lot of different custom reports and even database calls.
  • Some things do need to be set up custom. Even some things that have been asked for a many years.
  • Many functions and very Cisco-centric. The industry has a wide array of network devices, and they are not all Cisco.
  • Pricing can still be very high.
  • With the vast network we have, it would be impossible to keep track of all the equipment any other way.
  • May take an entire FTE to manage a SolarWinds installation.
We used Big Brother many years ago, and Nagios, but they did not last, and did not scale as well.
Cisco and Windows environments are more ideal then varied manufacturers, but there is still a lot of functionality if not.
