Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Serv-U to assist with large file transfers for one of our clients. It facilitates the interchange of data between our personnel and theirs.

Pros and Cons

User/profile management.
FTPS over the web.
SFTP over the SSH protocol.

The user interface on large screens becomes tiny and nearly unreadable without the aid of Windows Magnifier.
Active Directory integration is either absent or not straightforward.
Settings and configuration aren't always intuitive.

Return on Investment

Crucial for intercompany file transfers.
Trustworthy system that comes up every time after server reboots without fail.
Must keep paying yearly maintenance fees.

Alternatives Considered

Serv-U supports a highly configurable FTPS server over HTTPS, something OpenSSH does not.

The technicians over the phone demonstrate that they are willing and able to help. They're proactive, and they're actually interested and knowledgeable about their product. I'm most impressed by how tenacious they are when tracking down a problem reported with their software, even though Serv-U may not be at fault.
