Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor

Currently SolarWinds is being used at many of our subsidiaries. Our company has been through many mergers and acquisitions. We are planning on getting the whole company to use SolarWinds. This means getting rid of install bases of HP OpenView. When put head to head there really is no choice. SolarWinds wins hands down.
  • Asset discovery.
  • Custom MIBs
  • Interoperability
  • HA installations are hard to upgrade.
  • HA deployment has an active node that is plugged into the network and a standby node that is not. This makes patching the server much harder to do.
  • Upgrades in general can be very time consuming.
  • Quicker time to problem resolution
  • Being able to restart services in the console is a plus
  • We are able to notify other support teams that there services that they support have stopped. This makes us look so much more on top of things, rather than the user calling to complain that something is not running and when is it going to be fixed.
We have not used any other Application Monitoring software. We did demo other products (BMC, Cisco and Riverbed) but do not have any real world experience with these products.

Like:

The ability to monitor scheduled tasks. Our company performs a lot of automation through windows scheduled tasks and cronjobs, monitoring those task for failures allows the IT department to not be caught off guard.

Dislike:

One thing that I feel is lacking in this product is the report building. I also wish the licensing was better.
